Calheira Scores Late, But Men's Soccer Falls to St. Joe's, 2-1

Box Score

BALTIMORE – UMBC freshman forward Taylor Calheira (Towson, Md./Concordia Prep) scored a late goal, but it was not enough, as the Retrievers fell, 2-1, to St. Joseph's in non-conference action at Retriever Soccer Park.

UMBC's overall mark is now 3-3-1 on the season, while the Hawks improved to 3-5-0.

St. Joseph's frustrated the hosts most of the afternoon until Calheira settled a hard William Forby pass and blasted a left-footed shot from the top of the box into the right corner of the goal with 9:48 remaining. The goal was Calheira's second of the season and first since he notched the GWG in the opener versus GW.

UMBC had a pair chances in the box in the closing minutes, but were unable to get off a quality chance.

Hawk freshman Nemo Phillipp scored a pair of goals, converting in the 17' and 65'.

The Retrievers outshot St. Joseph's, 13-10 and took five of the game's nine corners.

UMBC junior goalkeeper Quantrell Jones (Baltimore, Md./Kenwood) made four saves for his side.

The regular season finale takes place at NJIT on Friday, April 9, at 7:00 p.m. A Retriever victory would propel the young squad into the four-team America East Championships.
