Men's Soccer Extended Foes' Scoreless Streak, But Can't Dent Net in Scoreless Draw at SBU

Box Score

STONY BROOK – Visiting UMBC extended its foes' scoreless streak to over 226 minutes, but could not dent the net and settled for a 0-0 double-overtime draw against Stony Brook in cold, blustery conditions at LaValle Stadium.

The contest was the America East Conference opener for both squads. The Retrievers are now 1-0-1 overall on the young season, while SBU is 0-2-1.

UMBC junior goalkeeper Quantrell Jones (Baltimore, Md./Kenwood) posted his ninth career shutout and second of the young season, making five saves.

Retriever freshman forward Spencer Hanks (Odenton, Md./Arundel) put all three of his shots on net and had his first intercollegiate goal negated by a controversial offsides call. Sophomore midfielder Dadi Ingason (Hafnarfjordur, Iceland) led all players with four shots attempted.

First Half

  • The Seawolves had the better of the play in the first half and Jones made a leaping save in the 7' to keep the game scoreless.

Key Moments

  • Hanks was in an off-sides position as UMBC sent a ball into the box in the 64'. But a Seawolf clearance hit one of their own players and the ball deflected to Hanks, who knocked the ball into the cage from short range. The initial call was off-sides, but the referee and his assistant consulted for several minutes before decided to let the call stand.

  • The Seawolves countered in the 75' and their leading scorer Aki Solvason got space inside the box and hit a shot bound for inside the near left post. But Jones did the splits and made a spectacular kick save to keep the game scoreless

Best Overtime Chance

  • SBU netminder Edmond Kaiser made a diving save on Hanks' header in the 103'.

Notes

  • Jones surpassed the 100-save plateau and now has 103. His nine shutouts are two shy of entering UMBC's all-time top ten.
  • The back-to-back shutouts are the Retrievers' first since the first two games of the 2017 campaign
  • UMBC extended its unbeaten streak versus Stony Brook to four (2-0-2).

The Retrievers get back into action on Tuesday, March 9 when they host America East newcomer NJIT. The opening kick-off at Retriever Soccer Park is set for 7:00 p.m.
