BALTIMORE – UMBC and Binghamton lined up and played nearly 124 minutes of lacrosse against each other over a four-day span and each team scored 14 goals.
The Retrievers (4-1, 3-1 America East) avenged Wednesday's 8-7 overtime loss to the Bearcats (2-2 America East) and triumphed, 7-6, on an unseasonably warm early spring afternoon at UMBC Stadium.
UMBC faced a fourth quarter deficit when Binghamton's Quinn O'Hara scored an unassisted goal 3:18 into the period. But Retriever senior LSDM Nick Doyle (San Diego, Calif.) caused a turnover and sophomore midfielder Dane Hall (Harwood, Md./St. John's College) carried the ball downfield and buried a hard right-hander past Binghamton goalkeeper Teddy Dolan to tie the game for the fifth time at the 5:24 mark.
Binghamton would win the ensuing draw, but sophomore defender Ricky Fedorchak (West Friendship, Md./Marriotts Ridge) caused a turnover and, after a Retriever timeout and missed shot, senior attackman Ryan Frawley (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) fed a cutting midfielder Brandon Galloway (Grasonville, Md./Queen Anne's) and the junior beat Dolan from the right alley to give the hosts their first lead of the second half.
Retriever goalkeeper Tommy Lingner (Fort Salonga, N.Y.) made a pair of saves in the final 4:14. After his stop of a William Talbott-Shere attempt with 90 seconds left, UMBC cleared and called time out with 45 seconds remaining and 37 on the shot clock.
Despite ferocious double-teaming by the Bearcats, UMBC junior attackman Trevor Patschorke (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) managed to escape and waste 25 seconds before completing a ground ball pass to junior middie Taylor Bohanan (Arnold, Md./St. Mary's). Bohanan drew a penalty and the Bearcats did not re-possess the ball in the final seconds.
Galloway and Hall each scored twice for UMBC, while leading scorer Nick Dupuis (Alexandria, Va.) led the way with a goal and two assists. Frawley also had a pair of helpers for the Retrievers.
Daniel Mackinney was the lone Bearcat to score multiple goals as he netted a pair.
For the second consecutive game, Dolan excelled in the cage, making 17 saves as UMBC outshot the Bearcats, 45-21. Three of Lingner's eight saves occurred in the fourth quarter.
UMBC took the lone two-goal lead of the day as Galloway scored on the game's first possession and freshman LSDM Ethan Robinson (Randallstown, Md./McDonogh) tallied his first collegiate goal on a fast-break at the 2:39 mark. But Binghamton struck twice in a six-minute span to knot the game at 2-2 after 15 minutes.
Each team would score twice in the second quarter and once apiece in the third to send the contest to the final period knotted at 5-5.
Three of UMBC's four victories this season have occurred by a single goal. The 4-1 start by the Retrievers matches their mark through the five games played in 2020, a feat not achieved since 2001.
The Retrievers return to action on Saturday, April 3 when they host No. 16 Vermont in an 11:00 a.m. contest at UMBC Stadium.
