Box Score Video Highlights
BALTIMORE – Ho-hum. Just another UMBC men's lacrosse game. Not.
The Retrievers (1-0) took the field for the first time in 51 weeks and routinely extended their winning streak to five. Not.
UMBC trailed Mount St. Mary's (1-3), 7-4, with three minutes remaining on the UMBC Stadium clock. The Mount was primed to post their first-ever victory on the Retrievers' home field.
But, UMBC scored three times in the final 2:58 of regulation and sophomore midfielder Mason Edwards (Alexandria, Va.) netted his first career goal just six ticks into the overtime period to hand the hosts an 8-7 overtime decision over the Mountaineers.
Edwards' high school teammate and classmate, attackman Nick Dupuis forced overtime by curling around the left post and converting with 16 seconds left in regulation.
The-Game Winner
- Sophomore face-off specialist Alex Poma (Marietta, Ga.) popped the ball loose on the overtime draw and Edwards snagged it out of the air. He drove down the field and bounced one over the shoulder of Mount netminder Dylan Furnback to give the Retrievers their first overtime win since the 2016 season.
Scoring Leaders
- UMBC sophomore midfielder Brandon Galloway (Grasonville, Md.) led all goal scorers with three. Dupuis posted a goal and an assist, while junior attackman Trevor Patschorke (Severna Park, Md.) contributed a pair of assists.
- C.J Stowell and Justin Weick each scored twice for the Mount.
In the Cage
- UMBC senior goalkeeper Tommy Lingner (Fort Salonga, N.Y.) made seven saves, while Furnback turned aside ten for the Mount.
Other Stat Leaders
- Poma won 10 of 19 draws and collected four ground balls. Sophomore LSDM Ricky Fedorchak (West Friendship, Md./Marriotts Ridge) led UMBC with five ground balls and added a pair of caused turnovers. Graduate student LSDM Colin Kasner (Crofton, Md./DeMatha) caused three Mount miscues and now has 49 in his career, fourth on UMBC's all-time list.
Run of Play
- UMBC led, 2-1, after the first quarter as senior attackman Ryan Frawley (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) and freshman midfielder Brian Tregoning (Silver Spring, Md./Good Counsel) provided the goals.
- The Mount outscored UMBC, 4-0, in the second quarter and led, 5-2 at intermission.
- The Mountaineers extended the lead to a game-high four goals at 6-2 just 2:16 into the third quarter. But Galloway scored a pair of unassisted tallies to cut the deficit to 6-4 after 45 minutes.
- After Stowell gave the visitors a 7-4 lead with 6:25 remaining, Retriever graduate student Brett McIntyre (Calgary, Alberta, Can.) brought UMBC to within 7-5 with 2:58 remaining. Poma won the ensuing face-off and Galloway tallied 21 seconds later to cut the deficit to 7-6.
- Kasner caused a turnover in the final 90 seconds of regulation and appeared to be tripped up on his way down the field, but he gave the ball up and the Mount had a chance to run the clock out after gaining possession. But they committed a turnover, setting up Dupuis game-tying score.
