Women's Lacrosse Falls to Towson, 12-5, in Season Opener

Box Score

BALTIMORE - Senior Lily Kennedy (Marriottsville, Md./Marriotts Ridge) scored two goals in the season opener against the Towson Tigers, but the Retrievers ultimately fell, 12-5, to the Tigers on Thursday afternoon.

FOR THE RECORD

Towson moves to 2-0 on the season while UMBC falls to 0-1.

STRAIGHT FACTS

After Towson started the game out with a quick goal, senior goalkeeper Lexi Roberts (Baldwin, Md../Fallston/Army West Point) made two big saves to keep the Tigers out of the net again.

Towson added another goal at the 12:35 mark but Kennedy followed up with her first goal of the season to close the gap to 2-1.

The Tigers added another goal before sophomore Claire Bockstie (Forest Hill, Md./Maryvale Preparatory) put a straight shot into the back of the net off a feed from classmate Megan Halczuk (Fawn Grove, Pa.) to put UMBC back within one, 3-2, with 2:25 to play in the first half.

The Retrievers won the ensuing draw but it was the Tigers who scored outside of a timeout with a minute on the clock; Towson would again score another goal with five seconds remaining in the half to take a 5-2 lead into halftime.

After freshman Kennedy Evans (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) won the opening draw in the second half, graduate transfer Katie Schluederberg (Elkridge, Md./Howard/Penn State) scored her first in a Retriever uniform to cut the Towson lead to 5-3 just 40 seconds into the half.

Towson used a 6-0 run to take an 11-3 lead before senior Courtney Renehan (Mt. Airy, Md./Glenelg) put a stop to it at the 7:48 mark.

The Tigers added a final goal before Kennedy netted her second of the game for the 12-5 final.
