Men’s Basketball Battles, Falls 89-77 at Princeton on Monday

UMBC men’s basketball (5-5) gave Princeton (9-3) all it could handle on Monday, but a late Tigers run pushed them in front for good.

Princeton, N.J.-- UMBC men's basketball (5-5) gave Princeton (9-3) all it could handle on Monday, but a late Tigers run pushed them in front for good. UMBC had it tied with just over six minutes left, but Princeton ripped off a 12-0 run to take the lead.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Princeton got the scoring started early, but L.J. Owens (Annapolis, Md./Severn School/William & Mary) scored seven quick points to make it 11-11 at the under 16 media timeout.
  • Nathan Johnson (Adel, Iowa) gave the Retrievers strong minutes off the bench, giving UMBC a lead with a big and-one.
  • Yaw Obeng-Mensah (Toronto, Ontario) and Keondre Kennedy (Atlanta, Ga.) put the Retrievers back in front 24-22.
  • Both teams went back-and-forth in the first half, with neither team leading by more than five. 
  • Darnell Rogers (Baltimore, Md./Indian Land (SC)/New Mexico JC) hit a driving layup late in the half, but the Retrievers trailed 43-39 at the break.
  • Owens led the Retrievers with nine first half points, Johnson added seven and six rebounds.
  • Princeton started out the second half with four straight points, but a Kennedy driving layup ended the run. 
  • UMBC would go in front after and ones from Johnson and Kennedy, but the Tigers had a response for each Retriever run.
  • Princeton would push out in front for good late using a 12-0 run and hold on for an 89-77 win on Monday.
NOTABLE:
  • UMBC ended the night shooting 45.8 percent from the floor and 37.5 percent from three. 
  • Owens led the way with 14 points, going 7-7 from the foul line.
  • Kennedy added 13 points with Rogers chipping in 11 and three assists.
  • Johnson ended the night with 10 points and seven rebounds, his second double digit performance in the last four games.
UMBC will return home to take on UNC Greensboro on Thursday night. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN3 and the ESPN app.
