BALTIMORE-- UMBC men's basketball (2-2) returns to Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena on Tuesday night to finish the Jerome Kersey Classic against American (2-3). The game between the Retrievers and Eagles will air on ESPN3 with a simulcast available on MASN2.
The Retrievers are coming off a 1-1 weekend with a win against Western Carolina on Saturday (91-75) and an 82-55 loss against Longwood on Sunday.

Scouting the Retrievers:
- UMBC returns home after going 1-1 in Farmville, Va. at the Jerome Kersey Classic this past weekend. The Retrievers got a big 91-75 win against Western Carolina before falling to host Longwood, 82-55.
- Darnell Rogers (Baltimore, Md./Indian Land (SC)/New Mexico JC) leads the Retriever attack averaging 13.8 ppg, shooting 41 percent from the floor and dishing out 2.8 apg.
- Keondre Kennedy (Atlanta, Ga.) is the only other Retriever in double figures, scoring at a 13.0 ppg clip and shooting 52.6 percent from the floor.
- Jacob Boonyasith (Grand Rapids, Mich.) has been cleaning the glass for the Retrievers, averaging a team-best 5.8 rpg.
- UMBC is averaging 72.8 ppg and forcing just over 13 turnovers per game.
Scouting the Eagles:
- American comes to Baltimore at 2-3 on the year having dropped their last three contests. The Eagles opened the season with wins against Marist and William & Mary.
- Stacy Beckton Jr. leads the team offensively averaging 14.8 ppg, shooting just under 50 percent from the floor at 47.5 percent.
- Beckton also leads the team in rebounding averaging 4.6 per game. No other Eagle is in double figures in the early part of the year.
All-Time Series:
- This will be the 12th all-time meeting between the two schools with the Eagles holding an 8-3 advantage in the previous 11.
- The last time these two met was in 2019 in Washington, D.C. where American defeated UMBC, 85-61.
- The last win for the Retrievers in the series came in 2009 in a 59-57 win on the road.
Milestone Watch:
- Several Retrievers are approaching career milestones in 2021-22. L.J. Owens is approaching the 1,000 point mark, needing just 277 points to achieve the mark. He is also just 13 games away from 100 career games played.
- Darnell Rogers needs 133 points to reach 500 career points.
- Newcomer Ray Salnave needs just 203 points to reach 1,500 career points after scoring 1,266 during his time at Monmouth and DePaul.
