BALTIMORE-- UMBC men's basketball will look to build off their 85-47 win against Penn State York when they head to Farmville, Va. for two games at the Jerome Kersey Classic, hosted by Longwood. UMBC is 1-1 on the year and will take on Western Carolina and Longwood at the tournament.

SCOUTING THE RETRIEVERS:
- UMBC comes into the weekend at 1-1 on the year after picking up an 85-47 win against Penn State York on Monday night. UMBC got a big contribution from Keondre Kennedy (Atlanta, Ga.) who poured in 17 points on 7-10 shooting. Darnell Rogers (Baltimore, Md./Indian Land (SC)/New Mexico JC) added 16 points with newcomer Ray Salnave (Elmont, N.Y.) adding 12 and four assists.
- The Retrievers had to battle off a feisty Penn State York side who hung in through the first 30 minutes. However, the Retrievers ended the game on a 24-0 run over 9:09 to pull away from the Nittany Lions.
- Kennedy leads the Retrievers averaging 15.0 ppg shooting 57.9 percent from the floor. Rogers is the only other Retriever in double figures at 12.5 ppg.
- Jacob Boonyasith (Grand Rapids, Mich.) is leading the team on the glass, averaging 9.5 rpg over two games, including a career-high 10 against Penn State York.
- As a team, UMBC is averaging 72.5 ppg and shooting 38.6 percent from the floor, corralling 48.5 rebounds a game.
SCOUTING THE CATAMOUNTS:
- Western Carolina comes into the Jerome Kersey Classic at 1-2 on the young season, dropping their last two contests at East Carolina (95-79) and Wake Forest (87-75) after defeating Bowling Green to open the year (79-71 F/OT).
- Nicholas Robinson leads the Catamount attack averaging 17.3 ppg, shooting 44.7 percent from the floor and a blistering 54.2 percent from three. He is also the team's leading rebounder at 10.7 rpg.
- Travion McCray and Tyler Harris are also in double figures scoring at 16.0 and 10.7 ppg respectively.
- Head coach Justin Gray is in his first season at the helm of Western Carolina. Gray had a prolific pro and college career at Wake Forest. With the Demon Deacons, he earned First Team All-ACC honors pairing with NBA superstar Chris Paul.
SCOUTING THE LANCERS:
- Longwood comes in at 2-1 having won their last two games against Virginia University of Lynchburg (80-46) and Mid-Atlantic Christian (93-47) after dropping the season opener at Iowa (106-73).
- Isaiah Wilkins leads the team scoring at a 13.7 ppg clip. He is also the team's leading rebounder at 8.0 rpg, shooting 44.4 percent from the floor and 45.5 percent from three.
- Leslie Nkereuwen is the only other Lancer over double figures at 13.0 ppg, pulling down 6.0 rpg. Justin Hill leads the team with 18 assists, good for a 6.0 apg average.
ALL-TIME SERIES:
- This will be the first time that Western Carolina and UMBC will meet in their program's history.
- The Retrievers and Lancers will be meeting for the first time since 2015 with Longwood holding a slim 6-4 lead in the all-time series.
- Back in 2015, UMBC took a 70-59 win in Farmville, and have won two straight in the series.
MILESTONE WATCH:
- Several Retrievers are approaching career milestones in 2021-22. L.J. Owens is approaching the 1,000 point mark, needing just 287 points to achieve the mark. He is also just 15 games away from 100 career games played.
- Darnell Rogers needs 163 points and one game played to reach 500 career points and 50 games played.
- Newcomer Ray Salnave needs just 222 points to reach 1,500 career points after scoring 1,266 during his time at Monmouth and DePaul.
