UMBC Men’s Basketball Makes 2021-22 Home Debut Against Penn State York on Monday

UMBC men’s basketball will play their first home game of the season at the newly named Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena on Monday against Penn State York.

BALTIMORE-- UMBC men's basketball will play their first home game of the season at the newly named Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena on Monday against Penn State York. The Retrievers are coming off a 77-60 loss in the season opener against UMass last Tuesday. Keondre Kennedy (Atlanta, Ga.) led the way with 13 points and eight rebounds in the loss.

Scouting the Retrievers:
  • UMBC comes into the Monday meeting at 0-1 on the year after dropping the season opener, 77-60 to UMass last Tuesday. The Retrievers held a four-point lead at halftime, but struggled from the floor in the second half en route to the loss.
  • Keondre Kennedy led the Retrievers with 13 points and eight rebounds. 
  • Dimitrije Spasojevic (Vrsac, Serbia) and L.J. Owens (Annapolis, Md./Severn School/William & Mary) each added 10 points with Spasojevic and Jacob Boonyasith (Grand Rapids, Mich.) adding a team-high nine rebounds. 
  • UMBC outrebounded the Minutemen, 45-37, but committed 19 turnovers in the contest.
     
Scouting the Nittany Lions:
  • Penn State York, members of the Penn State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC), comes to Baltimore at 3-2 on the year with wins so far this season against  Anne Arundel CC, Harford CC, and Williamson.
  • Michael Coleman leads the Nittany Lions in scoring at 20.7 ppg while grabbing 6.0 rpg. Coleman is shooting 46.9 percent from the floor and 42.3 percent from three.
  • Deriq Brown is also averaging double figures at 14.8 ppg.. Brown is the team leader in rebounding (9.0 rpg) and field goal percentage (65.5 percent).
  • Penn State York is averaging 76.0 ppg while shooting 44.8 percent from the floor as a team.

All-Time Series: 
  • This will be just the second time the two schools meet, with UMBC leading 1-0 after an 89-57 win back on December 30, 2019.

Milestone Watch:
  • Several Retrievers are approaching career milestones in 2021-22. L.J. Owens is approaching the 1,000 point mark, needing just 292 points to achieve the mark. He is also just six games away from 100 career games played.
  • Darnell Rogers needs 173 points and two games played to reach 500 career points and 50 games played.
  • Newcomer Ray Salnave (Elmont, N.Y.) needs just 234 points to reach 1,500 career points after scoring 1,266 during his time at Monmouth and DePaul.

  • The Retrievers will hit the road for a pair of games at the Lancer Classic on Friday and Saturday, November 19-20.
  • UMBC will take on Western Carolina on Friday at 7:30 p.m. before facing off with host Longwood on Saturday at 5 p.m.
