The UMBC women's and men's swimming and diving teams completed their grueling meet schedule on Saturday, Nov. 13 when they welcome the VMI Keydets. Towson Tigers. The meet gets underway at the UMBC Aquatic Complex at 1:00 p.m.

Both teams are coming off outstanding performances versus local rival Towson last Saturday. The women edged the Tigers, 151-147, while the men earned their first dual meet triumph of the season, prevailing, 157-141. Â

HONORED
Â
- With a dominant effort versus Towson on Nov. 6, UMBC's Caroline Sargent (Trumbull, Conn.) earned America East Conference Female Swimmer of the Week award.
The senior won three events (100 and 200 backstroke and 200 IM) and was part of 200 yard medley relay victory as UMBC defeated Towson by the narrowest of margins, 151-147.

- The America East Conference honored both junior Will Henrickson (Diver of the Week) and senior Kai Wisner (Swimmer of the Week) with the first men's weekly awards of the 2021-22 campaign.

HEATING UP THE POOL

- On the women's side, sophomore Makaela Hill (Catonsville, Md.) excelled for the Retrievers versus Towson, winning both the 50 and 100 freestyle events and rallying to earn the 400 freestyle relay team four crucial points and a second place finish in the meet-ending 400 freestyle relay.

- Junior Jenna Gwinn (Baltimore, Md./Mount de Sales) continued her brilliant fall, winning for the fourth and fifth times of the season by capturing the 100 and 200 breaststroke events.

- The UMBC men's swimming and diving team demonstrated their depth in the victory over Towson as six different Retrievers earned gold for the Retrievers.

- Wisner (Syracuse, N.Y.) won his fourth event of the fall, capturing the 1000 freestyle against the Tigers. Henrickson (Ellicott City, Md./River Hill) earned a pair of second-place finishes and was edged for gold by less than one point on the 3-meter board. Â

- After missing some time due to injury, senior Luka Zuric (Setauket, N.Y.) won the 200 backstroke by more than two seconds.

CONFERENCE FOE
Â
- VMI won the lone opponent that UMBC competed against in dual meet competition a year ago. The men won in Lexington, 216-75, while the women triumphed, 218-67. The teams combined to win 29 of 32 events. On the men's side, junior Niklas Weigelt (Clayton, Calif.) won all three sprint freestyle events. For the ladies, Sargent triumphed in the 100 backstroke and 200 IM, while senior Lily McCoy (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore) took both breaststroke events.

- The teams have won all four meets with the associate member of the America East, which started with a dual meet victory in Baltimore in 2018.

- The VMI squads have fallen in meets to Mount St. Mary's and Howard thus far. In the diving well, London Yerasimides captured the 3-meter board versus Howard. In a narrow 153-143 setback to the Bison, men's swimmers Chino Vera (100 back, 100 free) and Jack Sheehan (200 IM, 100 breast) won two events each.
