Large Homecoming Crowd Sees Men's Soccer Drop Tough Battle To Stony Brook

Box Score

BALTIMORE – UMBC controlled most of the first 60 minutes of play and took an early second half 1-0 lead, but Stony Brook rallied to defeat the Retrievers, 3-1, before a boisterous Homecoming crowd of 1,556 at Retriever Soccer Park.

The Retrievers fell to 6-6-1 and 1-3-0 in America East play.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After a crisply played but scoreless first half, UMBC sophomore midfielder Jago Lott (Somerset, U.K.) scored his second goal of the season on a direct kick from the left wing in the 48' to put the Retrievers in front.
  • Stony Brook earned back-to-back corners in the 61', and cashed in on a goal on a near post run and score by Kori Cupid.
  • In the 71', UMBC sophomore goalkeeper Jailon Gillespie (Laurel, Del.) made a great save on SBU header, but the rebound bounced out to Aki Solvason, who scored the first of his two goals to give the Seawolves their first lead.
  • Solvason scored an insurance marker in the 81'.

NOTABLE

  • UMBC outshot SBU, 19-16, and put nine on goal, but netminder Edmond Kaiser turned eight away. Gillespie made six saves for UMBC.

The Retrievers get right back into America East play on Wednesday, Oct. 13 when they host Binghamton (7:00 p.m.)
