Men's Soccer Welcomes Stony Brook for #Homecoming21 Saturday Evening Contest

The UMBC men's soccer squad (6-5-1, 1-2-0 America East) resumes America East play and faces the first of three consecutive SUNY match-ups when Stony Brook (5-4-0, 1-2 AE) visits Retriever Soccer Park on Saturday, Oct. 9. The game gets underway at 7:00 p.m. as an annual part of UMBC's Homecoming festivities. Weather permitting, there will be a fireworks display after the game.

Paul Mittermeier handles the broadcast for the America East digital network.

UMBC will honor the 2010 team at halftime. The Retrievers' first America East title squad had its 10-year anniversary celebration postponed one year due to COVID-19. The team posted a mark of 12-4-4 and defeated Princeton in the first round of the 2010 NCAA Championships.

DAWG BYTES

  • UMBC sophomore forward Taylor Calheira (Towson, Md./Concordia Prep) scored his third overtime game-winning goal of the season and the Retrievers rallied very late and nipped visiting Howard, 2-1, in extra time before an enthusiastic crowd at Retriever Soccer Park on Wednesday evening. The win snapped a three-game slide by the Retrievers.
  • Brothers Jackson (assist) and Ryan Becher collaborated on the game-tying goal in the 88'. Jackson also got the primary assist on Calheira's game winning goal in the 96'.
  • The Retrievers improved to 3-0-1 in overtime this season.
  • Calheira is tied for third in the country with nine goals, which is already the most by a Retriever since Pete Caringi III netted 13 in 2013. He leads the nation with five game-winning goals.
  • Calheira and Ryan Becher (seven goals) are the second highest scoring duo in the nation, one behind a tandem from Northern Illinois.
  • Calheira has four GWOT goals and six game-winning goals in 20 career contests.
  • UMBC has scored at least one goal in the first 12 games of the season, the longest scoring streak to open a campaign since 2001, when the Retrievers hit the scoreboard in the first 15 games.
  • Head Coach Pete Caringi, Jr., enters his 31st campaign at UMBC and now has a record of 308-195-77. At the start of the season, he was ranked 20th amongst active NCAA I coaches with the 302 victories and the most recent mentor to reach the 300-win level (Feb. 23, 2021 vs. GW) and 36th with a winning percentage of 59.9.
  • Associate Head Coach Anthony Adams, '97, begins his 25th season, patrolling the sidelines with his former coach, while former Retriever All-American Pete Caringi III, enters his eighth.

 A GLANCE AT THE SEAWOLVES

  • Stony Brook (5-4-0, 1-2 AE) raced out to a 5-2 start, but has dropped the last two matches in league play. After a 2-0 win over Vermont, SBU has dropped decisions at Binghamton, 1-0, and to Hartford, 3-1.
  • The Seawolves have scored and allowed 11 goals on the season. Freshman forward Jonas Bickus leads a balanced attack with three goals
  • Junior goalkeeper Edmond Kaiser has played all 838 minutes in goal for SBU. He is fourth in the conference with a 1.19 goals against average and has recorded three shutouts.

THE ALL-TIME SERIES

  • UMBC holds a 14-8-2 mark all-time versus the Seawolves and are 8-2-2 in the last 12 matches vs. SBU.
  • The teams met twice in the spring of 2021. The teams played to a scoreless draw on Long Island in early March, then UMBC rallied for a 2-1 win over Stony Brook at RSP later that month. Spencer Hanks scored in the 58' and 86' minutes to propel UMBC to victory.
