Binko Records Hat Trick, Leads Women's Soccer to 5-1 Win at Delaware State

Box Score

Video Highlights

Dover, Del – UMBC freshman midfielder Izzy Binko (Selbyville, Del.) recorded a hat trick in her home state, leading the Retrievers to a 5-1 victory over Delaware State at Alumni Stadium.

The five goals scored by UMBC is the most by the program since a 6-0 victory over Mount St. Mary's in September of 2014.

Graduate student midfielder Erin Stevenson (Sellersville, Pa.) and junior midfielder Juliana Rafaniello (Old Bridge, N.J.) added the other goals for the Retrievers.

"We made today difficult for us," said head coach Vanessa Mann. "DSU made us work for every possession. We struggled to show the best versions of ourselves today, however, we found a way to pull out the win. We must be better as we refocus to prepare for a very talented UNH side on Sunday."

The Retrievers snapped a three-game slide and improved to 5-5-2 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Hornets struck first on a long-range shot in the 3'.
  • But the Retrievers knotted the score six minutes later, as Stevenson converted on a penalty kick after a teammate was fouled in the right corner of the box.
  • UMBC took the lead for good in the 22', as Rafaniello distributed the ball from the center of the pitch to Binko on the left wing. The freshman struck a long ball that tucked beautifully into the far right corner of the goal.
  • Rafaniello stole the ball from a DSU player in the 32', broke in from 30 yards out and beat the keeper with a fake and subsequent right-footed shot into an empty net to increase the UMBC advantage to 3-1.
  • UMBC scored twice in a span of 55 seconds early in the second half in the 66' and 67'.
  • On both second half goals, Rafaniello sent Binko in on the left side, and the freshman drove toward goal and beat the goalkeeper with shots inside the near and far post respectively.

NOTABLE

  • Binko's hat trick is UMBC's first since Stevenson recorded one against New Hampshire in her freshman season of 2017.

UMBC resumes America East competition when they visit New Hampshire on Sunday, Oct. 10. Kick-off time is set for noon.
