Box Score Video Highlights | Postgame Interviews
BALTIMORE - UMBC sophomore forward Taylor Calheira (Towson, Md./Concordia Prep) scored his third overtime game-winning goal of the season and the Retrievers rallied very late and nipped visiting Howard, 2-1, in extra time before an enthusiastic crowd at Retriever Soccer Park.
The Retrievers trailed for 75 minutes of play before junior midfielder Ryan Becher (Hummelstown, Pa.) tied the score with 121 seconds remaining in regulation.
UMBC snapped a three-game slide and improved to 6-5-1 overall, while Howard fell to 1-7-2.
Calheira has nine goals on the season, the most by a Retriever since Pete Caringi III netted 13 in 2013.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- A UMBC defensive miscue in their own zone led to Howard's goal, which Amir Acree put away in the 14'.
- UMBC's William Forby (Vegle, Denmark) nearly tied two minutes later, but his blast from 25 yards away struck the post and bounded away from harm.
- HU had two great chances in the 50', 62' and 74', but none of the shots were on frame.
- Forby, who attempted seven shots in the game, put a pair on goal in the 67' and 69', but both were saved by Howard netminder Benjamin Hoeslii.
- Calheira hit the post from close range in the 84'.
- Finally, Becher fed a pass to his brother, senior forward Jackson Becher (Hummelstown, Pa.) at the edge of the box. The elder brother tapped it back to his younger sibling, whose shot from 21 yards out found the right corner of the net.
- In the 96', junior back Julian Conze (Telgte, Germany) stole a pass at midfield and sent a ball ahead to Jackson Becher. He cut a pass from left to right, where Calheira made one move and buried the game winner into the upper left corner of the net.
