Women's Soccer Makes Final Road Trip of Regular Season; Retrievers Play at UAlbany on Sunday

The UMBC women's soccer team (5-6-3, 1-4-1 America East) plays in its final road regular season contest of the year when they take on the UAlbany Great Danes (3-6-4, 2-2-2 AE) at Bob Ford Field on Sunday, Oct. 18.

The match gets underway at 3:00 p.m. and will be broadcast on the America East digital network.  

Freshman goalkeeper Abbey Cowles (Colts Neck, N.J.) stopped eight NJIT shots on goal as the Retrievers and Highlanders played to a 0-0 double overtime draw before 821 fans Retriever Soccer Park on Thursday.

NOTABLE

  • Cowles (1-1-2) has played 220 minutes on the turf at Retriever Soccer Park, has made 21 saves and has yet to allow a goal. She has three of UMBC's four shutouts on the season, and all three goals her occurred in one contest at UNH.  
  • After her five-point night at DSU on Oct. 7, junior F/M Juliana Rafaniello (Old Bridge, N. J.) leads the squad with five goals and 14 total points. She has netted the game-winning goal in three of five Retriever wins this season.
  • Freshman midfielder Izzy Binko (Selbyville, Del.) has recorded all four of her freshman year goals in the last five games. Her hat trick versus Delaware State is UMBC's first since graduate student Erin Stevenson (Sellersville, Pa.) recorded one against New Hampshire in her freshman season of 2017.
  • Junior midfielder Carolyn Koutsos (Boyds, Md./Good Counsel) has added three goals for UMBC, while sophomore midfielder Grace Harvey (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) and Stevenson have two apiece.
  • The five goals scored by UMBC in the 5-1 win at Delaware State is the most by the program since a 6-0 victory over Mount St. Mary's in September of 2014.

A GLANCE AT THE GREAT DANES    

  • UAlbany's five-game unbeaten streak (2-0-3) was halted on Thursday, as visiting Vermont defeated the Great Danes, 2-0. UA outshot Vermont, 20-6, but only managed to test the Catamount goalkeeper five times.
  • UAlbany has scored 14 goals on the year and allowed 20. The Great Danes are second in the league with 200 shots (15.4 per game).         
  • Senior striker Jasmine Colbert has scored half of the Danes' goals on the season and ranks second in the conference with her seven scores. She has attempted a league-high 61 shots this year, 18 more than the second-place shooter. 
  • Freshman goalkeeper Cassandra Coster is ranked fourth in the league with a .909 goals against average. She is third in save percentage at .837.  

THE ALL-TIME SERIES

  • This is the 19th meeting between UAlbany and UMBC, with the Great Danes holding a 10-7-1 advantage in the series.
  • The Retrievers dropped a 2-1 overtime decision to the Great Danes at Retriever Soccer Park in the spring 2021 campaign. UAlbany tied the game with six seconds remaining in regulation and won it 4:20 into overtime.
  • UMBC has dropped five straight in the series and is winless in six. The Retrievers' last win occurred in 2014, a 1-0 victory in New York.

UMBC plays its final two regular season contests at home, starting with a Sunday, Oct. 24 match versus Vermont. The game gets underway at 1:00 p.m. on the Bermuda grass of Retriever Soccer Park
