The UMBC men's soccer squad (7-6-1, 2-3-0 America East) visits the streaking UAlbany Great Danes ((8-4-0, 3-1 AE) on Sunday, Oct. 17 at Bob Ford Field in Albany, N.Y. The game gets underway at noon and will be broadcast by the America East digital network.
UMBC got back into the win column in league play with a sound 2-0 victory over Binghamton on Wednesday. Senior goalkeeper Quantrell Jones (Baltimore, Md./Kenwood) returned the to the starting lineup after missing nine games and recorded a two-save shutout, while junior back Julian Conze (Telgte, Germany) scored a goal and added an assist in the first 12 minutes of play to boost the Retrievers.
With four games remaining for five America East teams and three left for UMBC and three other schools, the Retrievers are tied for fifth place in the league standings. The top six teams qualify for the 2021 America East Championships. Â

- Conze posted his eighth assist, the most by a Retriever since Gaeton Caltabiano recorded eight in 2013. The fullback is tied with seven other players in the nation with eight assists.
- In his fifth game this season, Jones recorded his first shutout and the 11th of his career. It was Jones' second shutout versus Binghamton – the other occurred in 2018.
- Sophomore forward Taylor Calheira (Towson, Md./Concordia Prep) is tied with four other players nationally for eighth in the country with nine goals, which is already the most by a Retriever since Pete Caringi III netted 13 in 2013. He is tied with four other players for the spot top in the nation with five game-winning goals.
- Calheira and junior midfielder Ryan Becher (Hummelstown, Pa.) (seven goals) are the second highest scoring duo in the nation, one behind a tandem from Northern Illinois. Â
- Calheira has four GWOT goals and six game-winning goals in 22 career contests.
- UMBC has scored at least one goal in the first 14 games of the season, the longest scoring streak to open a campaign since 2001, when the Retrievers hit the scoreboard in the first 15 games.
- Head Coach Pete Caringi, Jr., enters his 31st campaign at UMBC and now has a record of 309-196-77. At the start of the season, he was ranked 20th amongst active NCAA I coaches with the 302 victories and the most recent mentor to reach the 300-win level (Feb. 23, 2021 vs. GW) and 36th with a winning percentage of 59.9.
- Associate Head Coach Anthony Adams, '97, begins his 25th season, patrolling the sidelines with his former coach, while former Retriever All-American Pete Caringi III, enters his eighth.
- UMBC is 7-0-1 when Conze hits the scoreboard.
- Calheira's three-goal game at Lehigh was UMBC's third multi-goal game of the season. He recorded a two-goal game vs. Mount St. Mary's on Sept. 14 and Becher scored twice in the 4-3 loss at Maryland.
- Becher now has 12 career goals and 32 total points (12-10-34).
- UMBC is 2-0-1 in overtime this season.
- The shutouts over Hartford and Lehigh were the first back-to-back clean sheets since the first two games of the 2017 season.Â
A GLANCE AT THE GREAT DANES Â Â
- UAlbany is 4-1 over its last five games, which includes three consecutive league victories.
- The Great Danes edged UMass Lowell, 2-1, at Bob Ford Field on Wednesday. The River Hawks took an early lead, but UAlbany tied it in the 38' and Saad Faiz scored the game-winner with ten minutes remaining.
- UAlbany has scored 12 goals on the year and allowed 14, but only permitted three goals in the last four outings.
- Senior midfielder Haflidi Sigurdarson has scored a team-high three goals on the season and all three have been game-winning tallies. Senior forward Austin DaSilva is tied for third in America East with five assists on the campaign. Senior goalkeeper Carlos Tofern is third with four shutouts and fifth in goals against average (1.18).
THE ALL-TIME SERIES
- The Retrievers hold a narrow 9-7-4 series lead over UAlbany and snapped a three-game winless streak with a 1-0 overtime win over the Great Danes on March 12. Ryan Becher scored the game's lone goal just 57 seconds into overtime.
- UMBC is 0-3-2 in its last five trips to UAlbany. The last Retrievers' win in the capital region occurred in 2010, a 3-1 triumph.
