Men's Soccer Hosts Binghamton in Critical #AEMSOC Match on Wednesday Evening

The UMBC men's soccer squad (6-6-1, 1-3-0 America East) kicks off the second half of the league schedule when they welcome Binghamton (7-3-1, 2-1-0) to Retriever Soccer Park on Wednesday, Oct. 13. The opening kick-off is set for 7:00 p.m. and the contest will be broadcast on the America East Digital Network.

UMBC controlled the majority of the first 60 minutes of play and took an early second half 1-0 lead, but Stony Brook rallied to defeat the Retrievers, 3-1, before a boisterous Homecoming crowd of 1,566 at Retriever Soccer Park on Saturday.

Sophomore midfielder Jago Lott (Somerset, U.K.) scored his second goal of the season on a direct kick from the left wing in the 48' to put the Retrievers in front. But SBU tied the game in the 61' and a pair of outstanding strikes by Aki Solvason in the 71' and 81' completed the visitors' comeback.

After opening with a convincing 3-0 America East win over Hartford, the Retrievers have dropped three straight, scoring one goal apiece in those setbacks.

DAWG BYTES

  • Sophomore forward Taylor Calheira (Towson, Md.) is tied for sixth in the country with nine goals, which is already the most by a Retriever since Pete Caringi III netted 13 in 2013. He is tied for the spot top in the nation with five game-winning goals.
  • Calheira and junior midfielder Ryan Becher (Hummelstown, Pa.) (seven goals) are the second highest scoring duo in the nation, one behind a tandem from Northern Illinois.
  • Calheira has four GWOT goals and six game-winning goals in 21 career contests.
  • UMBC has scored at least one goal in the first 13 games of the season, the longest scoring streak to open a campaign since 2001, when the Retrievers hit the scoreboard in the first 15 games.
  • Head Coach Pete Caringi, Jr., enters his 31st campaign at UMBC and now has a record of 308-196-77. At the start of the season, he was ranked 20th amongst active NCAA I coaches with the 302 victories and the most recent mentor to reach the 300-win level (Feb. 23, 2021 vs. GW) and 36th with a winning percentage of 59.9.
  • Associate Head Coach Anthony Adams, '97, begins his 25th season, patrolling the sidelines with his former coach, while former Retriever All-American Pete Caringi III, enters his eighth.
  • Junior back Julian Conze (Telgte, Germany) leads America East with seven assists.
  • UMBC is 6-0-1 when Conze hits the scoreboard.
  • Calheira's three-goal game at Lehigh was UMBC's third multi-goal game of the season. He recorded a two-goal game vs. Mount St. Mary's on Sept. 14 and Becher scored twice in the 4-3 loss at Maryland.
  • Becher now has 12 career goals and 32 total points (12-10-34).
  • UMBC is 2-0-1 in overtime this season.
  • The shutouts over Hartford and Lehigh were the first back-to-back clean sheets since the first two games of the 2017 season.
  • Head Coach Pete Caringi, Jr., enters his 31st campaign at UMBC and now has a record of 307-193-77. At the start of the season, he was ranked 20th amongst active NCAA I coaches with the 302 victories and the most recent mentor to reach the 300-win level (Feb. 23, 2021 vs. GW) and 36th with a winning percentage of 59.9.
  • Associate Head Coach Anthony Adams, '97, begins his 25th season, patrolling the sidelines with his former coach, while former Retriever All-American Pete Caringi III, enters his eighth

  • The Bearcats have averaged 1.0 goal per game over their last six games (3-2-1) and all three of their victories have come via the shutout route.
  • On Saturday, fifth-ranked and undefeated UNH defeated Binghamton, 4-1, at the Bearcats Sports Complex. UNH scored twice in a six-second span early in the second half. Junior forward Oliver Svalander tallied his fourth goal of the season in the 81' to trim the deficit to 3-1 before UNH added a late score.
