BALTIMORE-- UMBC men's basketball avenged their 70-63 loss on Saturday with a solid defensive effort in a 57-49 win on Sunday against the Hawks. Three Retrievers hit double figures, led by R.J. Eytle-Rock (London, England) with 14.
UMBC moves to 10-3, 6-2 AE while the Hawks fall to 9-6, 6-4 AE.
Eytle-Rock led all scorers with 14 points adding six rebounds and three assists. Dimitrije Spasojevic (Vrsac, Serbia) added 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds with Keondre Kennedy (Atlanta, Ga.) adding 10.
Austin Williams was the lone Hawk in double figures with 13 points adding a game-high nine rebounds.
The Retrievers came out of the gates with a solid defensive effort, forcing three Hawk turnovers in the first four possessions. Dimitrije Spasojevic was the workhorse early for the Retrievers scoring the first eight points as UMBC found them down by one at the first media timeout.
Following the timeout, the Hawks continued to increase their lead going on a mini 4-0 run. That would end as a 5-0 spurt from the Retrievers found them back in front as once again the two sides battled back-and-forth. A 7-0 run from the Retrievers gave them their largest lead of the half at 18-14, but Hartford held UMBC scoreless to take a five-point lead.
Keondre Kennedy would make it a one-point halftime deficit, beating the buzzer as UMBC trailed 27-26 at the break. Kennedy and Daniel Akin (London, England) had six points with Spasojevic's eight points and five rebounds led the Retrievers. Both teams shot 37 percent from the floor, but 20 points in the paint for the Retrievers kept them in it.
UMBC picked up where they left off in the first, going on an 8-0 run over the first four minutes to take a five-point lead. However, Hartford would claw back, taking the lead at the 11-minute mark before the Retriever offense started to pull away.
The Retrievers sparked a 7-0 run to retake the lead for good. UMBC would hit free throws late, holding off a late Hartford charge to win 57-49.
32 of UMBC's 57 points came in the paint as the Retrievers shot 35 percent from the floor, holding the Hawks to 32 percent including 27 percent in the second half. It is the second time this season that the Retrievers held an opponent under 50 points.
The Retrievers will hit the road to take on UMass Lowell next Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 23-24 with both games starting at noon on Watch ESPN.
