Eytle-Rock led the Retrievers with a season-high 27 points on 10-15 shooting, going 6-7 from the foul line. Keondre Kennedy (Atlanta, Ga.) continued his strong run of games with 13 points and five rebounds.
Nick Guadarrama led all scorers with 34 points. Jayden Martinez and Tyler Mattos each chipped in 11 points with Mattos adding 11 rebounds.
The first 20 minutes were a back-and-forth affair with multiple lead changes throughout. The Retrievers pushed ahead early with a layup from Dimitirje Spasojevic (Vrsac, Serbia) that was followed by a Darnell Rogers (Baltimore, Md./Indian Land (SC)/New Mexico JC) theft and runout that gave UMBC a 6-5 lead. However, the Wildcats took the lead back just minutes later getting four straight from Nick Guadarrama that forced a UMBC timeout.
UNH took control of the game late in the half, holding UMBC to just two points over the final two minutes of the half to take a 35-29 lead at the break.
Rogers led the Retrievers with nine first-half points as only four Retrievers scored in the first 20 minutes. R.J. Eytle-Rock added eight points with Spasojevic and Keondre Kennedy adding six. UMBC kept it close thanks to nine fastbreak points but were outrebounded, 24-16 giving up nine offensive rebounds.
UNH came out of the break on a hot streak going 4-7 from the field to take a double-digit lead early in the half. After the Retriever offense came to life, both teams went back-and-forth at a frenetic pace with UMBC cutting the deficit to single digits.
Then the Retriever offense came to life. Kennedy had a big and one putback to cut it to single digits once more that sparked a 15-0 run. Kennedy and Eytle-Rock had big and ones on the run to give the Retrievers their first lead since the first half with seven minutes to go.
The Wildcats would respond with a mini 5-0 run to give them the lead back briefly. It was Guadarrama and Eytle-Rock battling back and forth late, but Eytle-Rock had the final blow with the game-winner in the lane with 58 seconds to go. UNH had a shot at the buzzer, but it was off the mark completing the UMBC comeback, 68-66 on Sunday.
The Retrievers shot 52 percent for the game going 14-18 from the foul line. UMBC had 38 points in the paint and 13 fastbreak points to help aid them to victory.
