UMBC Baseball Kicks Off Nine-Game Homestand Against Coppin State on Tuesday

Baltimore, Md.-- UMBC baseball kicks off a nine-game homestand and 13 of their next 14 at home against the Eagles on Tuesday afternoon with first pitch moved up to 3 p.m. The Retrievers are coming off a 1-2 weekend that saw UMBC fall to Fairleigh Dickinson (3-1) and Navy (8-6) sandwiched around a big 10-5 win against Penn State on Saturday.

Scouting the Retrievers:

-UMBC comes into the contest at 2-10 on the year, coming off a 1-2 weekend that saw UMBC fall to Fairleigh Dickinson (3-1) and Navy (8-6) sandwiched around a big 10-5 win against Penn State on Saturday. 

-Dmitri Floyd (Dover, Del.) leads the Retrievers with a .333 batting average, the lone starter over the .300 mark. Blaze O'Saben (Warrenton, Va.) has a team-best 14 hits with seven runs scored and nine stolen bases. Christian Torres (Miami, Fla.) and Colin Casey (Ipswich, Mass.) have both driven in nine runs to lead the Retrievers. 

-Dustin Gosnell (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake/Anne Arundel CC) leads the pitching staff with a 1.04 ERA in five appearances and 8.2 innings of work. Joe Nestel (Drexel Hill, Pa.) has struck out 16 batters over 16.1 innings with a 1-1 record in three starts. 

Scouting the Eagles:

-The Eagles make the trip to Alumni Field at 3-8 on the year, having lost their last three games. All 11 games so far this year have been on the road and will not play a home game until April 1. Coppin State was swept this past weekend against UNC Asheville, being outscored 17-4 over three games. 

-Justin Banks and Marcos Castillo lead the Eagles in almost every statistical category on offense. Banks is batting .325 with 13 hits, four doubles, two home runs and seven RBI. Castillo is just behind him at .324 with 12 hits, 10 runs scored, three home runs and nine RBI. 

-Bradley Tuttle has struck out 18 batters in 12.2 innings and Aaron Rea is just behind him fanning 17 batters. The Eagles as a staff have a combined 5.40 ERA with opponents batting .266 against the Eagle hurlers. 

All-Time Series:

-This will be the 53rd meeting all-time between the two and the first of two this year with the Retrievers leading the series 49-3. UMBC only lost once in the 2004 season prior to the Eagles winning two of the last five matchups since 2017. Last year, UMBC swept the season series with wins of 16-2 and 8-4. 

On Deck:

-UMBC will continue their homestand with a three-game America East series against Maine on Saturday and Sunday. The two will play a doubleheader starting at noon on Saturday, before finishing the series Sunday at noon with a single game.
