UMBC Baseball Hosts Fairleigh Dickinson, Penn State; Travel to Navy This Weekend

Baltimore, Md.-- UMBC baseball will make their 2020 home debut on Friday and Saturday after starting the season on a nine-game road swing. The Retrievers are 1-8 on the year, with the lone win coming at Stetson last weekend.

Scouting the Retrievers:

-The Retrievers come into the weekend at 1-8 on the year, with their lone win coming on Feb. 28 in a 9-8 win at Stetson. UMBC most recently fell, 21-4 to Towson on Wednesday. The Retrievers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead off a three-run double from Christian Torres (Miami, Fla.) but the Tigers scored 21 of the next 22 runs in the game for the win. 

-Dmitri Floyd (Dover, Del.) leads the team at the plate with a .360 batting average, going 9-25 from the plate with two doubles, three RBI and seven runs scored. Colin Casey (Ipswich, Mass.) is also over .300 at .303 on the year. He has driven in seven runs, just one behind Torres who has the team lead at eight. Of Torres' 10 hits, seven have been for extra bases with four doubles, two triples, and one home run. 

-On the mound, Reid Celata (Virginia Beach, Va.) leads the weekend rotation with a 4.66 ERA in two starts. Joe Nestel (Drexel Hill, Pa.) has the most strikeouts on the staff with 12. 

Scouting the Knights:

-Fairleigh Dickinson comes to Baltimore at 2-6 on the year, most recently snapping a six-game losing streak with a 12-11 win against Iona on Wednesday. The Knights are 2-0 at home and 0-6 on the road in the early going. 

-FDU has four players hitting .300 or better, led by Tom Ruscitti at .393. He leads the team with 11 hits, drilling four home runs and 10 RBI. Nate Brodsky also has 11 hits with a .333 batting average. James Donlon (.308) and Tony Socci (.300) are also hitting over .300 on the year. 

-Aaron Cohn will take the mound versus the Retrievers on Friday. Cohn will be making his second start, sporting an 0-1 record and a 15.19 ERA in 5.1 innings of works. He has allowed 11 hits and nine earned runs. 

Scouting the Nittany Lions:

-Penn State sits at 9-2 on the year, winners of their last six games including a series sweep against Princeton last weekend. All 11 games the Nittany Lions have played have been in Cary, N.C. with their first real home contest coming on March 18 against America East foe Binghamton.

-Gavin Homer leads the team at the plate with a .467 batting average, going 14-30 at the plate this season. He has 13 RBI with three doubles, one triple, and one home run. Ryan Ford and Matt Wood are also over .300 batting at .351 and .325 respectively. 

-Kyle Virbitsky will take the mound against the Retrievers on Saturday. Virbitsky is 1-1 with a 4.50 ERA in three starts this year. He has had a hand in a shutout, throwing 14.0 innings this year with 15 strikeouts. 

Scouting the Midshipmen:

-The Midshipmen are off to a fast start in 2020, sitting at 9-1 on the year having won their last nine games, most recently sweeping UMass, outscoring the Minutemen 31-7 in the series. Navy is a perfect 7-0 at home, going 2-1 in neutral-site contests. 

-Zach Stevens is leading the team with a .419 batting average, leading the way with five doubles, one triple, and three home runs. Zach Biggers is hitting .341 with 14 hits and Christian Policelli is leading the team with 10 RBI. 

-Charlie Connolly leads a pitching staff that has a combined ERA of 3.38. He has hurled 19.1 innings with a 1-0 record and 0.93 ERA. He also leads the staff with 29 strikeouts. 

All-Time Series:

-This will be the 14th meeting all-time between FDU and UMBC with the Retrievers leading the series 10-3. Last time the two met, UMBC swept a pair of games in Baltimore on April 6, 2018. UMBC won 2-1 and 14-1 and have never lost to the Knights in Baltimore. 

-The Nittany Lions and Retrievers have met just once before with the Retrievers winning a 2-1 contest in North Carolina in 2018. 

-This will be the 49th meeting all-time and first of two matchups this year with the Mids. Navy leads the series 27-21 with the two splitting the series last year, each winning at home. Prior to last year, the Retrievers had won five of the last six dating back to the 2015 season. 

On Deck:

-Following the game with Navy, the Retrievers will have 12 of the last 13 games in March at home, starting with a midweek contest against Coppin State on Tuesday, March 10 at 6 p.m.
