BALTIMORE-- Junior guard Keondre Kennedy (Atlanta, Ga.) provided a big lift off the bench for the Retrievers scoring a career-high 18 points and made key plays down the stretch in a 74-67 win for the Retrievers. The win extends their win streak to seven, their best start since the 2016-17 season.
UMBC is now 7-1, 3-0 AE on the year while the Bearcats fall to 0-6, 0-3 AE.
Brandon Horvath (West River, Md./Southern) led all scorers with 20 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Kennedy was the only other Retriever in double figures with 18 on 7-13 shooting.
Brenton Mills led Binghamton with 17 points with Tyler Bertram adding 16 and George Tinsley recording a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
Binghamton got out early, but it was the Retrievers who had the first run with a 6-0 spurt thanks to an L.J. Owens three to take a 7-2 lead at the under 16 timeout. That lead would remain at five after Owens hit another three that broke a nearly three-minute scoreless drought. Sophomore Nathan Johnson (Adel, Iowa) added a triple to increase the lead to eight forcing a Bearcat timeout.
However, the Bearcats would respond with a 7-0 spurt of their own to cut the Retriever lead to just one, however, Keondre Kenndedy would end it with a corner three. That sparked a run that pushed the lead back to eight. But it was the Bearcats that had the final run of the half, going on an 8-0 run capped by a buzzer-beating three to tie it at 29-29 at the break.
Brandon Horvath led the Retrievers with eight points with Owens and Kennedy each adding six. UMBC benefitted from good shooting from deep, going 7-15 (47 percent) from three. The Retrievers forced 13 turnovers but gave up five offensive rebounds that led to nine-second chance points for the Bearcats.
Both teams came out red hot from the floor with UMBC going 5-5 from the field, including 4-4 from three. The Retrievers would pull in front but once again, the Bearcats found a response and would keep the deficit within a couple of points all half.
Keondre Kennedy led the charge for most of the second half. He had a hand in three straight possessions with a putback, dunk, and assist to Dimitrije Spasojevic (Vrsac, Serbia) that gave UMBC a 54-49 lead. After the Bearcats climbed in front late, Kennedy had a big block that helped seal a 74-67 win for UMBC.
The Retrievers shot 44 percent from the floor and 52 percent from three, outscoring the Bearcats 28-12 in the paint. Binghamton did shoot 42 percent from the floor, but 16 Bearcat turnovers led to 19 UMBC points.
The Retrievers and Bearcats finish their two-game series tomorrow at 1 p.m. on ESPN 3.
