Box Score Loretto, Pa.-- UMBC men's basketball bounced back nicely from their season-opening loss with an 80-65 win at Saint Francis on Saturday afternoon. The Retrievers had three reach double-digits scoring led by senior Brandon Horvath (West River, Md./Southern) with 18 points and 12 rebounds. It was his second straight double-double and the eighth of his career.
UMBC moves to 1-1 on the year while the Red Flash fall to 1-1 in the early going.
Horvath finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds for his second straight double-double. Darnell Rogers (Baltimore, Md./Indian Land (SC)/New Mexico JC) ended with 15 points, all in the second half with Dimitrije Spasojevic (Vrsac, Serbia) added 12 in the victory.
Mark Flagg led the Red Flash with 16 points with Tyler Stewart and Maxwell Land adding 12 and 10 respectively.
After trailing by one at halftime, the Retrievers found their rhythm out of the gate in the second. UMBC went on a 7-0 run to take their largest lead at that point forcing an early Saint Francis timeout. Keondre Kennedy (Atlanta, Ga.) added to the advantage with an up and under move at the under 12 timeout that extended the lead and the Retrievers would not look back.
UMBC held SFU scoreless for an over three-minute stretch that extended their advantage to double digits late. Rogers would put the final nail in the coffin with a three and subsequent steal and finish late as UMBC defeated Saint Francis 80-65.
The Retrievers shot 50 percent from the floor, shooting over 50 percent in the second half en route to 48 second-half points. UMBC turned the Red Flash over 17 times, turning them into 21 points, getting 40 of their 80 points in the paint.
Saint Francis gained the upper hand early in the game with an 8-2 lead early, but back-to-back threes from Kennedy and freshman Matteo Picarelli (Milan, Italy) tied it. UMBC would grab their first lead of the game with Spasojevic getting an and one off a beautiful feed from Kennedy.
Brandon Horvath would then hit his stride with a steal and slam on the other end that ignited a 10-2 run to put UMBC back in front. However, the Red Flash fought back, getting a bucket just before the buzzer to take a 33-32 lead into the break.
The Retrievers will make their home debut on Wednesday, Dec. 2 when they host Delaware at the UMBC Event Center. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. and can be seen on Watch ESPN and the ESPN app.
