EMMITSBURG, Md. - The UMBC women's soccer team picked up its first win of the season after a strong offensive and defensive performance, shutting out the Mount St. Mary Mountaineers, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon.

STRAIGHT FACTS

The game started slow for both teams, as Elysia Paolillo (Holliston, Mass.) and Danielle Fuentes (Rockville, Md./Magruder) both had shots in the first 15 minutes of the half.

In the 37th minute, Fuentes sent a ball to Laura Ventura (Gaithersburg, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) who took two dribbles and sent the ball into the left corner of the net to put the Retrievers up, 1-0.

Seven minutes later, it was deja vu as Ventura passed a ball over to Fuentes, who was able to lay the ball into the right corner to give UMBC a 2-0 heading into halftime.

The Mount looked to threaten early in the second half as they sent a shot towards the net in the 49th minute but Alyssa Minnick (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) made a diving stop to keep the game as a shutout for UMBC.

Minnick made two more huge saves in the 65th and 79th minutes, allowing the Retrievers to keep hold of their 2-0 lead.

In the 83rd minute, Caroline Koutsos (Boyds, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) pushed a shot towards the net, but The Mount's goalkeeper got a hand on it to keep it out of the net. Off the rebound, Christina Corbi (Medford, N.J.) tapped the ball into the right corner to put UMBC up, 3-0.

Fuentes tried to add another goal to her total for the day in the 84th minute, but the Mountaineers kept it out of the net.

FOR THE RECORD

The Retrievers picked up their first win on the season to move to 1-1-2 overall. The Mountaineers fall to 0-4-0 on the year.

MINDING THE NET

Minnick picks up her first collegiate win after making five saves in the shutout. Sydni Surowiec and Charlotte Elrod split time in the net, making a combined five saves.

BY THE NUMBERS

10/19/17 -  Today's shutout victory over The Mount marks the first time the Retrievers have kept their opponent out of the net since defeating Vermont, 1-0, in October 2017.

16 -  For the second game in a row, UMBC has recorded 16 shots in a game, eight of them being on goal; the Retrievers have out-shot their opponents in every contest so far this season, as they had a 16-12 advantage over the Mountaineers today.

4 - Nikki Saad (Hummelstown, Pa.) led the Retrievers with four shots on the night; Fuentes had three shots, all on goal.

1 - This marks the first road win in head coach Vanessa Mann's career.

UMBC will stay close to home for its next contest as they head to Towson on Thursday, September 5. The Retrievers and Tigers will kick off at 5 p.m.
