Women's Soccer Falls to American on 108th Minute Golden Goal

WASHINGTON, D.C. - A goal in the 108th minute was the deciding factor as the UMBC women's soccer team fell, 1-0, to the American Eagles on Wednesday afternoon.

 

STRAIGHT FACTS

The Eagles took the first shot of the game in the third minute, as Charly Slavick sent a shot right into the arms of Jade Wilkins (Stoney Beach, Md./The Catholic High School).

 

Danielle Fuentes (Rockville, Md./Magruder) put the first shot on net for the Retrievers, but Morgan Lang was able to make the save.

 

Fuentes and Elysia Paolillo (Holliston, Mass.) took another two shots at the end of the first half but neither connected with the net.

 

In the second half, Nikki Saad (Hummelstown, Pa.) recorded the first shot in the 48th minute, but Ryleigh Brown made the stop.

 

After Wilkins made back-to-back saves in the 70th and 71st minutes,  Christina Corbi (Medford, N.J.) and Meredith Webber (Yardley, Pa.) both looked to put the Retrievers on the board but were stopped by Brown.

 

The last shot of the second half was a save by Wilkins to send things to overtime.

 

The Eagles took four shots in the first OT, including one that hit the left post with 22 seconds remaining. Juliana Rafaniello (Old Bridge, N.J.) took the only shot for UMBC, sending it into the hands of Brown.

 

In the second OT, Corbi put the first shot on goal as Brown made the save.  Juliana Saling sent the winning goal into the upper right corner of the net in the 108th minute to seal the win for the Eagles.

 

FOR THE RECORD

The Eagles move to 5-6-2 on the year as the Retrievers fall to 1-10-2.

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

The Retrievers and Eagles were almost even in shots, with the hosts holding an 18-16 advantage with a 9-6 on goal benefit. 

 

UMBC had a 14-12 hold going into overtime but were outshot, 6-2, in both overtime periods.

 

The Retrievers led in the corner kick category, 5-3.

 

Fuentes led the team with four shots on the day. 

 

MINDING THE NET

Morgan Lang started the first half for the Eagles, making one save. Ryleigh Brown took over in relief, making five saves in 62:48. Wilkins made eight saves in net for the Retrievers.

 

ONTO THE NEXT ONE
The Retrievers return to America East action on Sunday, Oct. 13 as they host Vermont for Alumni Day at 1 p.m.
