BALTIMORE – Junior forward Sam Solomon (Fort Meade, Md./Meade) scored his first two career goals as the host Retrievers exploded with four second half scores and defeated Liberty, 4-1, in ideal conditions at Retriever Soccer Park.

UMBC halted a three-game winless and scoreless streak and improved to 4-5-1 in the non-conference match-up. Liberty slid to 4-8-0 on the campaign.

After a scoreless first half, UMBC senior midfielder Nick Gumbs (Damascus, Md./Damascus) halted a 358-minute drought by recording his first goal of the season. Cutting toward edge of the box, Gumbs took a Dadi Ingason (Hafnarfjodur, Iceland) pass from the left wing and drilled a left-footed shot which hooked inside the far left post in the 54th minute to put the hosts ahead.

Then, Solomon, who entered as a substitute in the 62nd minute, scored less than two minutes after entering the game. Freshman midfielder Ryan Becher (Hummelstown, pa.) headed sophomore back Jordan Ehart's (Severna Park, Md./Mount St. Joseph) long throw-in towards the middle of the box, where Solomon sharply headed it past LU netminder Danny Cordero.

Less than twelve minutes later, Becher again set up Solomon for the score. Becher's 60-yard delivery from the defensive side of the field found a sprinting Solomon, who beat his defender and knocked in the goal from 12 yards out.

After the Flames' Tyler Welch sublime 22-yard shot spoiled the UMBC shutout in the 87', UMBC senior Colin Weyant's (Perry Hall, Md/Perry Hall) hard work paid off as he worked out of the right corner and send a ball inside. On a second effort, classmate Tre Pulliam (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) registered his third goal of the season from eight yards away.

Solomon's two-goal effort matched Becher's two-goal afternoon versus George Washington last month, while Becher's two-assist game equalized Weyant's two helpers in the same contest.

UMBC held a 9-8 advantage in shots and each goalkeeper posted a pair of saves. UMBC sophomore goalkeeper Quantrell Jones (Baltimore, Md./Kenwood) came within minutes of back-to-back shutouts.

The Retrievers return to America East competition when they host 13th-ranked New Hampshire (8-0-2, 2-0-0) on UMBC's Homecoming 2019. Kick-off is set for 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 12.
