Women's Soccer Earns First #AEWSOC Win over Maine, 2-1

ORONO, Maine - Using 47 seconds, the UMBC women's soccer team picked up its first America East conference win of the season on Sunday after defeating the Maine Black Bears, 2-1.

 

STRAIGHT FACTS

The Black Bears took a quick 1-0 lead after scoring just 47 seconds into the game off of a goal from Nicole Bailey.

 

The first shot for UMBC came in the 23rd minute when Erin Stevenson (Sellersville, Pa.) sent a shot into the hands of the Maine goalkeeper. A few seconds later, Jade Wilkins (Stoney Beach, Md./The Catholic High School) made one of her five first-half saves to keep Maine out of the net again.

 

In the 31st minute, Juliana Rafaniello (Old Bridge, N.J.) attempted to put the Retrievers on the board but was thwarted by the Black Bears' goalie.

 

Christina Corbi (Medford, N.J.) had one last shot effort in the first half blocked before the clock hit zero.

 

In the second half, Maine came out with two quick shots that Wilkins was able to save.

 

In the span of 47 seconds, the Retrievers took a 2-1 lead over the Black Bears. At the 64:11 mark, Laura Ventura (Gaithersburg, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) scored off a pass from Corbi. Corbi then scored her own goal off the assist from Danielle Fuentes (Rockville, Md./Magruder) at the 64:58 mark. 

 

The Black Bears sent two shots on net in the 68th and 82nd minutes, but Wilkins made the saves to preserve the team's lead. Maine sent on final shot on goal in the 89th minute but it was kept out of the net.

 

FOR THE RECORD
UMBC moves to 2-11-2 overall and 1-5-0 in America East play. Maine falls to 5-7-1 on the year and 1-5-1 in conference contests.

 

BY THE NUMBERS

Maine outshot UMBC, 18-9, including an 11-3 advantage in the first half. The Black Bears also held an 11-5 on goal advantage.

 

This is the second year in a row where UMBC has won in comeback fashion over Maine; last season, the Retrievers were down 2-0 before scoring three unanswered goals over the Black Bears.

 

Corbi led the Retrievers with three shots; she also led the team with three points to bring her season total to 11 (5g, 1a), matching her point total from last season.

 

MINDING THE NET

Wilkins picks up her first win on the season after making 10 saves in goal. Kira Kutzinski made three stops in 90 minutes of play.

 

ONTO THE NEXT ONE
The Retrievers will return home to Retriever Soccer Park on Sunday, October 27 when they host Hartford at 2 p.m. Prior to the game, the team will honor its four graduating seniors: Rayven Conner, Courtney Culp, Jess Hopkins, and Nikki Saad.
