Torres Leads UMBC Baseball to Sweep of Fairleigh Dickinson on Friday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Baltimore, Md.—Sophomore Christian Torres (Miami, Fla.) helped lead the Retrievers to a doubleheader sweep of Fairleigh Dickinson on Friday afternoon. Torres had the clutch go-ahead single in game one, as well as plating the go-ahead runs in 2-1 and 14-1 wins.

UMBC improves to 9-15 on the year, while the Knights fall to 7-14.

Game One:

Starters Chase Bailey (Fairfax, Va.) and Evan Raiburn were strong from the start, with neither side giving an inch in the early going. However, the Knights broke through first, getting a run in the fourth on a fielders' choice to take a 1-0 lead.

The Retrievers answered, taking the lead in the sixth. AJ Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J.) led off with a single, advancing on a wild pitch. Zach Bright (Fairfax Station, Va.) followed up with a walk, with both moving over on a sacrifice bunt from Zack DeThomasis (Rensselaer, N.Y.). Torres then came up and laced a single to right, scoring both Wright and Bright to take a 1-0 lead.

Stephen Schoch (Laurel, Md./Appalachian State) came on in the seventh and shut the door for his sixth save of the year, tying the single season record.

Torres was a torrid 3-3 from the dish with two RBI. Bailey went five strong, striking out six. Freshman Aaron Husson (Hawley, Pa.) picked up the win in an inning of relief.

Game Two:

Game two started the way game one did with the Knights taking an early 1-0 lead in the first. However, the Retrievers jumped on FDU in the bottom half, putting up seven runs, as Torres got the scoring started with a two-RBI single. Joey Goodwin (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) scored on a balk just pitches later. Dalton Stewart (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro), Mitchell Carroll (Oakton, Va.) and Wright each brought in runs in the inning.

The Retrievers added to their total with four runs in the third, one in the fourth and two in the sixth to cruise to a 14-1 win in game two.

Wright and Torres each plated four runs with two hits, as UMBC pumped out 16 hits in the nightcap. Mitchell Wilson (Hagerstown, Md./St. James) picked up the win going four innings, giving up three hits.

The Retrievers are back in action with a pair of midweek games against George Washington on Tuesday and Delaware on Wednesday.
