Baseball Holds-Off Iona, 9-8, for Sixth-Straight Win

BALTIMORE – The UMBC Baseball team picked up its sixth straight win as it held off visiting Iona, 9-8, on Thursday night at Alumni Field

The Retrievers (15-9, 5-1 AE) opened up the scoring in the bottom of the second inning, jumping ahead of Iona 2-0.

Danny Orr singled to left to open the inning, moving up 90 feet on an infield single off the bat of Kyle Eddington. Jacob Bagania made it back-to-back infield singles, with a throwing error from pitcher Andrelys Payamps, allowing Orr to score the game's first run. With Eddington now on third after the error, Brooks Henderson drove him in with a sacrifice fly to center.

UMBC pushed three more runs across in the bottom of the fourth inning, getting an RBI single from Bagania to score Derek Paris, who walked and advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches. Now leading 3-0 with runners on first and second after a Henderson single, Dylan Melton drove in Bagania with a single to left. Henderson would come around to score on a throwing error by the third baseman, trying to nab Melton, who was taking second on the throw.

Iona finally broke through against starter Eddie Sargent in the fifth, getting an RBI single from Jordan Overton. With the bags full and one away in the fifth, Kailen Hackmann entered, allowing a two-run double to Anthony Zollo to make it 5-3 before Braize Mitchell drove in two with a single to tie the game at 5-5.

UMBC immediately answered back in the bottom of the fifth, scoring a pair of runs to retake a 7-5 lead. Paris doubled to center, putting two runners on with one away for Eddington. The junior shortstop singled through the left side, scoring Orr to put UMBC back on top. Bagania chopped one to second, taking a wild hop to score Paris, pushing UMBC's lead to 7-5.

Iona pulled within a run with a Malachi Costello sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth, but UMBC quickly pushed the lead back to two with a sacrifice fly of its own, as Paris drove in Ehi Okojie in the bottom of the sixth to make it 8-6. A Danny Wyatt bases-loaded walk in the seventh pushed the lead to 9-6 for UMBC.

The Gaels plated two unearned runs in the top of the ninth, but Sergio Droz got a lineout to Melton to strand the tying run at second and end the game.

Hackmann got the win to improve to 3-0, as he went 2.2 innings in relief, allowing two runs and striking out four. Droz picked up his third save of the season.

Melton and Eddington each recorded their seventh multi-hit games of the season, while Bagania had three hits after entering the day with only two on the season.

The last six-game winning streak for UMBC was an eight game one from March 16-26, 2024

Game two of the series is Friday night at 6 p.m.
