Retriever Baseball Hosts Eastern Shore in Midweek Action; UMBC vs. Delaware Moved to Next Week

Baltimore, Md.—UMBC baseball will host the Hawks in midweek action on Tuesday. UMBC vs. Delaware, originally scheduled for Wednesday will be moved to next Wednesday, April 11 in Newark. The Retrievers are coming off a 2-1 America East series win against Binghamton this past weekend. UMBC took game one 8-6 in comeback fashion before splitting the double header on Saturday with a 6-1 win and 5-3 loss. The Retrievers are 7-15, 4-2 AE on the year.

Scouting the Retrievers:

-UMBC enters the midweek contests at 7-15 after taking two of three from Binghamton this weekend. UMBC took game one 8-6 in comeback fashion before splitting the double header on Saturday with a 6-1 win and 5-3 loss.

-Freshman Joey Goodwin (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) and senior Zack Bright (Fairfax Station, Va.) lead the team at the plate with a .375 and .286 average respectively. Goodwin as appeared in the last six games, going 6-16 from the plate with two runs scored and three RBI. Bright leads the team with 22 hits and 14 RBI, drilling four doubles, one triple and two home runs.

-Mitchell Wilson (Hagerstown, Md./St. James) leads the rotation with a 3.97 ERA with a 1-1 record in 22.2 innings pitched. He has 19 strikeouts, with seven of them coming this past weekend. Stephen Schoch (Laurel, Md./Appalachian State) leads the bullpen and the team with a 1.88 ERA throwing a team high 28.2 innings with 42 strikeouts.

Scouting the Hawks:

-Eastern Shore is coming off a 2-1 series win against Delaware State in MEAC action this weekend. The Hawks took game one 16-9 before dropping game two 8-5. Eastern Shore took the rubber match 2-0 to move to 6-22 on the year.

-The Hawks have three players hitting over .300 this year led by Ryan Rotondo at .313. Dwayne Marshall and Dominic DeBlaise are batting .309 and .302 respectively. Joey Nicastro leads the team with 13 RBI and 21 hits. 

-Chris Melrath leads the pitching staff with a 1.50 ERA in ten appearances. Toby Hoskins leads the rotation with a 3.46 ERA in seven starts with two complete games and 24 strikeouts.


All-Time Series:

-The Hawks and Retrievers will be meeting for the 14th time with the last meeting coming back in 2015. UMBC has never lost to Eastern Shore in a series that dates back to 1979. The two played twice in the 2015 season with UMBC winning by scores of 8-0 and 5-0.

On Deck:

-The Retrievers will return to Alumni Field to host a three-game set with Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday and Sunday. The Knights and Retrievers will play a single game on Saturday at 6 p.m. with a double header on Sunday starting at noon.
