Lowell, Mass. – UMBC held a 7-4 lead after three quarters, but host UMass Lowell scored six unanswered fourth period goals and defeated the Retrievers, 10-7, at the Cushing Field Complex.

UMBC sophomore face-off specialist Jake Brothers (Elkridge, Md./Mount St. Joseph) won a season-high 14 (of 21) face-offs and captured 10 ground balls to give his squad the time of possession edge throughout the game.

Freshman attackmen Steven Zichelli (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) and Brett Baucia (Crofton, Md./Archbishop Spalding) scored two goals apiece for UMBC.

Brothers won six-of-seven fourth quarter draws, but each Retriever offensive possession of the frame ended in a turnover. UMBC still led, 7-5, with less than five minutes remaining, but a fast break goal by the River Hawks' Austin Lane cut the deficit to 7-6 with 4:42 remaining.

UML scored the tying goal with 3:33 to play, then Lane notched the game-winner with 1:55 remaining.

UMass Lowell improved to 5-5 overall and 2-1 in America East play, while UMBC fell to 2-7, 0-2.  

After falling behind, 1-0, in the first minute of play, UMBC reeled off four consecutive goals to take a 4-1 advantage with 1:33 to play in the first quarter. Steven Zichelli scored the early game-tying and go-ahead goals and follow ups were notched by Baucia at the 2:48 and 1:33 marks respectively. But UML scored a pair of goals in the final 16 seconds of the stanza to cut the deficit to 4-3 after 15 minutes.

The Retriever defense stiffened in the second quarter and junior midfielder Billy Nolan (Crofton, Md./Arundel) posted the only score of the period. Nolan notched his team-leading 11th of the campaign at the 8:24 mark to five the visitors a 5-3 lead, a margin they took into the halftime break.

UMBC outscored UML, 2-1, in the third quarter to take a three-goal advantage into the final period.   

UMBC freshman Tommy Lingner (Fort Salonga, N.Y.) got the start in the cage and recorded five saves. UML freshman counterpart Hunter Braun was credited with 20 stops for the River Hawks.

Baucia's two goals were career-firsts for the freshman.     

The Retrievers return to action next Saturday, April 7 when they host top-ranked Albany at UMBC Stadium for a 3:00 p.m. America East Conference contest.
