BALTIMORE – Towson junior forward Brian Fobbs hit a step-back 3-point field goal with 10.4 seconds left to snap a 76-all tie and propel the visiting Tigers to an 80-76 double overtime victory before a season-high 2,476 at the UMBC Event Center.

UMBC graduate student forward Joe Sherburne (Whitefish Bay, Wisc.) had a chance to tie the game, but his off-balance 24-footer was off the mark with four seconds left. Towson secured the rebound and Nakye Sanders hit one of two free throws to seal the victory.

TU snapped a three-game slide and improved to 3-7, while UMBC's two-game win streak came to an end and the Retrievers fell to 6-5.  

Fobbs scored a game-high 32 points, converting six (of 12) of Towson's nine treys and converting all ten free throw attempts.

UMBC sophomore forward Brandon Horvath (West River, Md./Southern) led four Retrievers in double figures with 19 points.

Towson converted 23-of-28 from the stripe, while UMBC cost itself with subpar shooting. The Retrievers did not shoot a free throw in the game until 8:23 remained in the second half and proceeded to misfire on seven of their first eight attempts. UMBC finished 11-of-22 from the line over 50 minutes.

UMBC led, 56-51, inside the four-minute mark of regulation, but a Fobbs trey with 1:35 remaining sliced the lead to 57-56. Horvath missed a pair of free throws with 62 seconds left and Sanders put the Tigers ahead by one with a put-back of his own miss with 42 seconds remaining.

The Retrievers missed from outside and inside on the next possession, but TU committed a turnover, tying to throw a long down-court pass. UMBC junior guard K.J. Jackson (Houston, Texas) was fouled on a drive, but knocked down just 1-of-2 from the line to knot the score at 58 and a Fobbs trey at the horn was off the mark.

UMBC led for a good chunk of the first overtime period, but back-to-back treys by Towson's Justin McNeil gave the visitors a 68-64 lead with 47 seconds remain. Sherburne would hit a three 10 seconds later to slice the lead to one. Towson would hit 3-of-4 free throws in the final 26 seconds, but Jackson was clutch for UMBC, hitting all four, including two to knot the score at 71-apiece with eight seconds left.

Towson again had a chance for the win in 45 minutes, but a jumper in the paint was off the mark.

The Retrievers never led in the second overtime period.

Jackson scored 17 points, junior forward Arkel Lamar (Bridgeport, Conn.) added 15 and Sherburne contributed 14 points and a game-high six assists. Sherburne moved into 12 th place on UMBC's all-time scoring list with 1,244 points.  

UMBC's first half struggles continued, as the Retrievers misfired on 15 of their first 17 shots from behind the arc and fell behind Towson, 22-15, at the 6:47 mark of the period.

The Retrievers would rally and knot the score at 27-all on a dunk by sophomore forward Brandon Horvath (West River, Md./Southern) with 2:43 to play in the first. But Towson scored five straight before a Lamar trey brought the hosts to within 32-30 at intermission.

UMBC finishes the week at home to face Florida Gulf Coast on Sunday. Special tip off time is slated for 7:00 p.m.
