BALTIMORE - UMBC extended its school record of home wins to start a season to ten, as the Retrievers withstood a Binghamton second half rally and defeated the Bearcats, 69-57, at the RAC Arena.

Junior forward Joe Sherburne (Whitefish Bay, Wisc.) led all scorers with 18 points and graduate student guard Jairus Lyles (Silver Spring, Md./De Matha) added 17 as the hosts improved to 14-8 overall, 5-2 in America East play and 10-0 at the RAC Arena.

Binghamton, which shaved a 20-point halftime deficit to five on several occasions down the stretch, fell to 10-12 overall, 1-6 in league play.

The 5-2 start in the America East matches UMBC's best seven-game mark, equaling the 2007-08 league championship team's success.

The Retrievers used a mammoth 24-3 run in the final nine minutes of the first half to turn a 15-12 deficit into a 36-16 halftime advantage. UMBC held Binghamton to eight first-half field goals and converted 9 of their final 17 shots in the period to take control.

The Bearcats has whittled the deficit to 48-33 by the 13:21 mark of the second half, then proceeded to score ten straight points to get within 48-43 with 10:25 remaining. A Sherburne trey stemmed the tide on the next possession, but the visitors fought back to within 59-54 on an Everson Davis treys with 4:12 to play. After an exchange of empty possessions, UMBC senior Jourdan Grant (Bowie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) knocked down a trey and Sherburne capped the game-deciding 8-0 run with a left corner three to put UMBC ahead, 67-54 with 1:31 remaining.

Sherburne hit 7-of-11 shots from the floor, 4-of-6 from distance and added five rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals. The Retrievers improved to 13-1 on the season when he scores in double figures.

Lyles added six caroms, four assists and three steals and became the eighth player in school history to reach the 500-field goal (505) plateau. He also moved one point past Brian Hodges ('08) into sixth place on UMBC's all-time scoring list with 1,473 points.

Grant scored 10 points for UMBC, while freshman forward Daniel Akin (Elthham, England) added eight points and a season-best and team-high eight rebounds. Freshman forward Brandon Horvath (West River, Md./Southern) made his first career start for an injured Arkel Lamar (Bridgeport, Conn.) and added 9 points in 16 minutes.

UMBC only attempted 51 shots, one shy of a season-low, but converted 26 (51.0 percent) and knocked down 9-of-23 from long distance against the far-reaching Bearcat zone.

Davis led the Bearcats with 14 points, while freshman reserve Tyler Stewart poured in 13.

UMBC evened the all-time series with Binghamton at 15-all and defeated the Bearcats for the fourth consecutive time.

The Retrievers welcome Maine to the RAC Arena on Saturday, Jan. 27 at 1:00 p.m.
