UMBC Track and Field Returns to Staten Island for NYC Gotham Cup Friday

Baltimore, MD – UMBC track and field heads to Staten Island for their second straight weekend, competing in the NYC Gotham Cup, after multiple top ten finishes last Saturday in the Great Dane Classic.

Last Time Out (Great Dane Classic):

Senior Ifa Eado led the men, running a time of 1:54.17 in the 800 meter run to earn the silver.  Sophomore Brian Nelson also had a strong outing, placing fourth in the 200 meter dash, and sixth in the 60 meter dash with times of 21.88 and 6.88 respectively.  Nelson, Jamal Cody, Andrew Daniels, and James Oakley III placed eighth in the 4x400 meter relay, while freshman Taylor Baranoski finished seventh in the mile run.

For the women, Juniors Kelsey Ponton and Aliya Sharp led the way, with Ponton placing sixth in the 5000 meter run (18:17.53) and Sharp placing eighth in the 60 meter dash (7.99).  Classmate Yinka Alabi came in ninth in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 9.44, and sophomore Briana Roberts placed tenth in the 800 meter run.

Last Year at the NYC Gotham Cup:

Both the men and women had strong outings last year.  The men had Cody finish fifth in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.33, and Oakley finished sixth, in 21.82.

Urgy Eado led the distance runners, placing second in the 800 meter run clocking in at 1:54.06, while Matt Bennett finished sixth in the mile run, with a time of 4:22.41.  Eado also was on the first place 4x800 meter relay team that earned first place with a time of 7:51.27.  Rami Phillips, Ty Thronson, and Miles Smith ran the event with Eado.

In the field, Jacob Netschke finished fourth in the high jump, clearing 1.99 meters on his jump.

For the women, Ponton and Courtney Mattson finished third and fourth respectively in the 5000 meter run.  Erin Patrice had two top ten finishes, coming in tenth in both the 60 meter (7.84) and 200 meter dashes (25.61).  Roberts also took tenth in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:17.63.

Sharp, Alabi, Funmi Daramola, and Nailah Johnson earned second in the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:56.41.

Up Next:

The Retrievers will travel to State College, Pa. to partake in the two-day, Penn State National Open on January 26-27.
