Volleyball Sweeps George Washington; Freeman Named Tournament MVP

Box Score

Washington, D.C. – Freshman outside hitter Carmen Freeman (Memphis, Tenn./St. Mary's) posted her third straight double-double en route to MVP honors as the UMBC Volleyball team swept host George Washington (25-16, 25-21, 25-23) to close out the GW Tournament on Saturday afternoon.

Freeman finished with 12 kills and 10 digs as she averaged 12.3 kills and 14.6 digs per match in three games. Senior Ashley Ramos (Orlando, Florida/Liberty/Monroe JC)also had 12 kills and hit .526 en route to being named to her second consecutive All-Tournament Team. The outside hitter averaged 9.3 kills per match while hitting an average of .466.

The Retrievers (7-6) were led defensively by junior Kristin Watson (Bowie, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) with a match-high 25 digs, while junior Krytsia Negron (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Colegio Adianez) had a match-best 42 assists.

UMBC never trailed throughout the first set, as the Colonials (4-9) tied the set at 7-7.  The Retrievers would pull away slowly with strong defense, not allowing George Washington to score more than two points in a row after the score was tied at 3-3.  UMBC would take the its largest lead with the final point of the set off a kill from Ramos.

The team received kills from Lauren Mortimer (Queen Anne's, Md./Queen Anne's), Abbie Mirabella (Hockessin, Del./St. Mark's), Franchesca Reed (Aurora, Colo./Grand View), and Freeman throughout the set.

The Retrievers fell down early in the second set, and trailed until they tied the game up with a kill from Mortimer at 18-18.  This kill sparked an 8-3 run that finished off the set.  Freeman recorded four of her kills in the run, and Mortimer also added a kill.

The third set began with the Colonials scoring the first two points, which led to a strong response from UMBC with a 7-0 run of their own.  Ramos provided two kills and Reed had a kill in the run.

The Colonials would battle back and take the lead at 20-19, and hold it until 22-20, but UMBC would go on a 6-1 run to close out the set and the match. Mirabella, Freeman, and Ramos would provide kills in the game-ending run.

The Retrievers will close out their home non-conference schedule on Tuesday when they take on Howard at 7:00 PM at the RAC Arena
