Stony Brook, N.Y. – The UMBC Softball Team split a double header Saturday at Stony Brook, dropping the first game 3-0, and taking game two 4-0. The Retrievers (15-20, 1-3 America East) were led to victory by a shutout performance by junior Kim Puccio (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) in game two. Puccio allowed eight hits while striking out nine and walking none.
Game 1:
In the first game, senior Jessica Holte (Ashland, Va./Atlee) led the Retrievers in the circle. The senior tossed a complete game, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits and no walks, while striking out three.
The Seawolves (7-17, 3-1 AE) took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second, taking advantage of a fielding error by the Retrievers. They would tack on one more in the bottom of the sixth on a homerun.
The Retrievers were led at the plate by juniors Carly Lesko (New Milford, N.J./New Milford) and Haley DeLany (Lederach, Pa./Souderton Area) who tallied two hits each, including a double for DeLany.
Game 2:
The Retrievers were able to breakthrough for their first run of the day in the fourth inning thanks to a heads up base running play by senior Kaelin Jackson (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional), stealing home after classmate Kelly Lane (Albany, N.Y./Colonie Central) stole second on the same play.
The Retrievers tacked on three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth, when Lane drove in two runs off a single after the first two batters walked. Sophomore Chelsie Delperuto (Syracuse, N.Y./Solvay) drove in the third run of the inning with an RBI groundout.
Puccio worked the entire game, shutting out the Seawolves, including working out of a bases loaded, one out jam in the bottom of the seventh, inducing a fly out and a strike out to finish the game. She raised her record to 6-6 on the year and recorded her second complete game of the season.
The Retrievers will return to action tomorrow to finish their series off with Stony Brook with a game at 12:00 PM.
