ORONO, ME – In the team's first road contest in almost a month, the UMBC women's soccer team fell, 1-0, to the Maine Black Bears in an America East contest on Sunday, October 1. The Black Bears move to 4-6-1 overall and 2-1-0 in conference play, while the Retrievers fell to 2-6-3 overall and 0-2-0 in America East contests.

The Black Bears scored early in the first half as Kendra Ridley sent a header shot into the goal after Emilie Andersen's corner kick in the 16th minute.

The Retrievers had a few chances in the first half to tie things up as sophomore Jessica Hopkins (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) sent two shots towards the goal that Maine's Annalena Kriebisch was able to block out.

In the second half, Maine went straight for the goal early as Jane Stevens tried to give her team another goal, but freshman Jade Wilkins (Stoney Beach, Md./The Catholic High School) made the save.

UMBC's best effort in the second half came after a shot by junior Jenna Denis (Paris, France) was initially blocked and sent back out into the field. Freshman Olivia Bronson (Gaithersburg, Md./St. Andrew's Episcopal) collected the ball and sent it toward the goal, making Kriebisch lean to clear it out for a save.

Denis had another good look in the 62nd minute after she headed a corner kick taken by Christina Corbi (Medford, N.J./Shawnee), but the ball sailed wide.

Overall, the Black Bear edged out the Retrievers in shots taken, 13-12, but UMBC held a 12-6 advantage in corner kicks, taking nine of them in the second half alone.

Hopkins and classmate Nikki Saad (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) each had three shots in the game, with Hopkins sending two on goal.

In goal, Kriebisch moved to 4-6-1 on the season after making four saves in goal and picking up her fourth shutout of the season. Wilkins fell to 0-1-0 after allowing the lone goal but made four saves in her first collegiate start.

UP NEXT FOR THE RETRIEVERS: UMBC will stay on the road as they travel to Binghamton on Thursday, Oct. 5 for a 6 p.m. matchup with the Bearcats.
