Women's Lacrosse Runs Away with 20-5 Win Over VCU

Box Score

The women's lacrosse team found the offensive footing they were missing in their season opener with a 20-5 victory over VCU at UMBC Stadium. Sophomore attacker Carolyn Jamison (Westminster, Md./Westminster) scored five goals and added two helpers for a career best seven points.

The Retrievers came out fast with two quick goals from junior attacker and co-captain Sam Nolan (Fallston, Md./Fallston) in the first few minutes of play. Less than twenty seconds after scoring her second goal, Nolan found sophomore midfielder Marissa Davey, who put in what would be her first of four goals.

Nolan finished the game with five-points by netting a hat trick and recording two assists.

Davey went one better and finished the game with six points off four goals and two assists.

Throughout the first half and into the second, the Retrievers used good ball possession and hard cuts to the crease to keep the offense rolling. With all the offensive pressure, VCU was never able to establish themselves in their own offensive half of the field.

Junior midfielder/attacker Jennie Milligan (Crofton, Md./South River) scored four goals in the victory, and sophomore midfielder Caitlin Miller (Fredrick, Md./Tuscarora) put in two goals and had two assists.

Freshman Payton Van Kirk (Ocean City, Md./Stephen Decatur) and sophomore Gabrielle Cardina (Litiz, Pa./Manheim Township) each tallied their first goals of the season in the victory. It was also Van Kirk's first career goal.

All three keepers saw time in net for the Retrievers. Junior Ashley Peakcock (Crofton, Md./Elizabeth Seton) started for the second consecutive game, while sophomore Kelsey Major (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) and freshman Carly Tolino (Middletown, Md./Middletown) saw time in relief. The win brings Peacock's record up to 1-1 this season.

The Retrievers found the net on half of their free position shots, with Jamison hitting on two of her three attempts. Davey failed to convert on her single attempt.

UMBC played tough at the dot and won 24 draw controls with Miller, who led the America East conference in draw controls last season, bringing in a game high seven.

Up next, UMBC hosts American University in a midweek matchup starting at 3:00 p.m. this Wednesday, Feb. 24, at UMBC Stadium.
