Women's Lacrosse Falls in the Snow at Vermont on Friday Morning

Box Score Burlington, Vt. – Senior attacker Libby Staples recorded a team-high four points and added a career-high eight draw controls, but the visiting UMBC women's lacrosse squad dropped a 12-8 decision against the Vermont Catamounts in America East action on Friday morning.

UMBC (6-3, 1-1 AE) had its two-game win streak snapped in the snow on Virtue Field as the hosts led from start to finish.  Staples (two goals, two assists), sophomore attacker Reese Macintosh (two goals), and sophomore midfielder Tess Curtis (2 goals) led the way offensively.  Sophomore goalie Emine Luznar made a career-high 13 saves, and freshman midfielder Olivia Worden chipped in with six draw controls.

Vermont (5-5, 1-1 AE) got two goals from five different players to break a three-game losing skid.  Lydia Doraz and Jane Trauger led the way with two goals and two assists each. Goalie Ayla Shea made 11 saves to lead the defense.

The Catamounts jumped out to a 3-0 lead at the 7:41 mark and never looked back.  Caitlin Haggerty opened the scoring with a free-position tally just 1:44 into the contest to give Vermont the lead for good.  A woman-up goal by Lyndsay Lefebvre, followed by a transition tally from sister Lauren Lefebvre, capped the opening run.

UMBC got on the board with 4:24 left in the first quarter as sophomore attacker Sam Hewitt scored a woman-up goal off a feed from senior attacker Lizzie Bateman.  The hosts, however, rattled off four consecutive goals to grab a 7-1 advantage early in the second quarter.

The Retrievers inched within 7-3 with 2:30 left before intermission as sophomore attacker Emily Knapp (goal, two assists) stuffed in a rebound off her own free position attempt, followed by a laser from Macintosh.

Vermont got one back to grab an 8-3 lead at the break as Karina Seth found the back of the net with 17 ticks left.

The Catamounts extended their lead to a game-high seven goals, 11-4, after Ali Cabot beat Luznar at the 8:29 mark of the third stanza.

The remainder of the game was played in heavy snow, and the Retrievers never got closer than four goals.

UMBC was outshot by a 36-23 margin and committed 17 turnovers compared to eight by Vermont.  The Catamounts went 20-for-20 on clears while the Dawgs were 15-of-21.  The Retrievers dominated inside the circle as they won 16 of 22 draws.

The Retrievers will play William & Mary in a neutral-site game on Wednesday at Gainesville High School.
