Women's Lacrosse Travels to Vermont on Friday Morning

Last Time Out
  • Sophomore Tess Curtis scored a career-high four goals and added an assist to help lead the UMBC women's lacrosse team to a 12-7 victory over the Binghamton Bearcats in the America East opener at UMBC Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
  • In addition to Curtis' heroics, the Retrievers received two goals apiece from Libby Staples (2 assists), Reese Macintosh (three assists), and Olivia Worden (seven draw controls).  Senior captain Lizzie Bateman provided a pair of assists.
  • Sophomore Emine Luznar was terrific in goal, making nine saves while adding two groundballs along with a caused turnover. Senior Emily Renehan paced the defense with a pair of caused turnovers while freshman midfielder Madelyn Renehan and sophomore attacker Emily Knapp (assist) each picked up a team-high three groundballs.
  • Binghamton (3-6, 0-1 AE) jumped out to a 2-0 advantage at the 10:52 mark of the opening quarter on goals by Emma Blloshmi and Carla Curth.  However, the hosts scored five of the next six goals to grab a 5-3 lead with 2:37 left in the first half.  Sophomore attacker Sam Hewitt (assist from Curtis) and Staples (Woman Up, assist Macintosh) scored a pair of late first-quarter goals to even things up, and then Macintosh gave UMBC their first lead off a feed from Bateman just twenty-nine ticks into the second frame.  Christina Lauro brought Binghamton even at 3-3; however, Worden (from Bateman) and Macintosh (from Staples) scored back-to-back goals to supply the hosts with a 5-3 lead. Jess Robinson scored less than a minute before halftime to bring the visitors within 5-4.
  • Binghamton scored 1:09 into the second half, but UMBC took total control of the contest with a dominant third quarter, doubling up the Bearcats, 10-5.  Curtis, who ignited the run with a Woman-Up goal at the 12:02 mark, scored three times during a 5-0 run.  Sophomore attacker Annika Wray and Worden also found the back of the net during the stretch.
  • The Bearcats cut the deficit to 10-7 with a pair of late fourth-quarter tallies, but Curtis and Staples put the game out of reach in the closing minutes.
  • Shots were even at 27 while UMBC held a 13-8 edge in draw controls  Binghamton went just 2-for-11 on free position shots.
About Vermont
  • Vermont dropped an 8-7 contest against Bryant in their America East opener last Saturday in Smithfield, Rhode Island.
  • The Catamounts matched a season-high with 22 successful clears Saturday. They also had 22 against Iona on Feb. 17.
  • Junior goalkeeper Ayla Shea made nine saves for the Catamounts Saturday. She has made nine or more saves in four games this year.
  • Lydia Doraz posted her seventh multi-goal game of the season Saturday. She now has 20 goals this season and 32 points.
  • Maggie Parker led all players Saturday with three caused turnovers. It marked a new career-high for the junior defender.
  • Jane Trauger leads the squad with 23 goals this season.
Series History
  • UMBC leads the all-time series over Binghamton, 17-6.
  • The Retrievers are 12-9 all-time versus the Catamounts.
  • The Retrievers have won five of the last eight matches.
  • Last season, UMBC dropped an 18-14 decision against the Catamounts in the regular-season finale for both squads.
  • Senior attackman Grace Bruce led UMBC with three goals, an assist, and seven draw controls. Senior midfielder Katana Nelson, junior midfielder Lauryn Warfield, freshman attacker Emily Knapp, and junior attacker Lizzie Bateman scored two goals.
Curtis & Luznar & Worden Honored by America East Conference
  • Following their efforts in an America East-opener win over visiting Binghamton last Saturday, standouts Tess Curtis and Emine Luznar were honored with weekly awards by the Conference on Monday afternoon.
  • Curtis was named the America East Offensive Player of the Week after she scored a career-high four goals and added an assist, while Luzanr was named the Goalie of the Week for the second time this season by making nine stops, picking up two ground balls and having a caused turnover. 
Head Coach Amy Slade
  • 2021 National Lacrosse Hall of Fame inductee Amy (Appelt) Slade is in her 14th season at the helm of the Retrievers and 17th overall with the program. Slade served as a co-head coach for her first two seasons at the head of the program after being hired as an assistant coach in August of 2009.
  • Slade had a career record of 110-96 (.532). 
  • She enjoyed 11-win seasons in 2016-17, 2017-18, and 2024-25.
  • Slade, who won the prestigious Tewaaraton Trophy and led the University of Virginia to a national championship in 2004, joined the UMBC women's lacrosse staff in August 2009.  She was inducted into the 2020 class of the US Lacrosse Hall of Fame after an illustrious career with the Cavaliers where she was a four-time All-American at Virginia, where she set school records for career goals (258) and points (373) and ranks second in career assists (115). Her goals and points totals are in the top-10, respectively, in the NCAA Division I record books, and she set an NCAA record by scoring a goal in 66 straight games.
 Preseason Honors
  • The America East Conference announced its Preseason All-Conference Team and Preseason Coaches' Poll in January.  Sophomore attacker Emily Knapp, senior defender Ella Killian, and sophomore midfielder Tess Curtis were all recognized by the league's coaches.
  • Knapp burst upon the season in 2025 after earning a redshirt in 2024 and was named the America East Rookie of the Year. Knapp was second in the league with 4.25 points per game (68 points) and finished fifth with 2.94 goals per game (47 goals). She has also added 21 assists, 24 ground balls, and 11 caused turnovers. Knapp was the third Retriever to be named Rookie of the Year and the first since 2022.
  • The speedy and fearless Killian is a significant reason why UMBC ranked 15th in the country in clearing percentage. Killian, who finished sixth on the circuit with 4.44 draw controls per game, also compiled 24 ground balls and caused 12 turnovers.
  • Curtis ranked seventh on the squad with 20 points (18 goals, two assists). She recorded hat tricks against La Salle and New Hampshire in her first season as a Retriever.
2025 Rewind
  • UMBC finished the 2025 season with an 11-5 record and has been picked to finish fifth out of seven teams this year. Last season, the Dawgs placed fourth with a 3-3 conference record
  • The Dawgs return six players who started at least half of the squad's contests last season (attacker Emily Knapp, attacker Libby Staples, attacker Lizzie Bateman, defender Lauren Flynn, defender Ella Killian, and defender Emily Renehan)
  • UMBC will look to replace All-Conference performers Grace Bruce (48 goals, 11 assists), Katana Nelson (55 goals), and goalie Isabella Fontana (10.44).
