Box Score

Video Highlights

BALTIMORE –  UMBC tied a school record by converting 17 3-point field goals as the Retrievers cruised to a 92-61 victory over Hood (Md.) College in the debut of head coach Ryan Odom.

Junior guard Jairus Lyles (Silver Spring, Md./DeMatha) picked up where he left off last season, as he led six Retrievers in double figures with 18 points. Lyles set a school record in an abbreviated season in 2015-16, averaging 23.0 points per game.

Seniors Will Darley (Timonium, Md./Dulaney) and Ben Grace (Catonsville, Md./The Gilman School) led the barrage of treys, converting four apiece. Darley scored 14 points, while Grace and sophomore wing Joe Sherburne added a dozen apiece.

Leading  8-7, the Retrievers scored 18 consecutive points to open up a 26-7 advantage with 11:17 to play in the first half. Darley buried three of his four treys in that surge and sophomore guard Joel Wincowski (Lake George, N.Y.) capped the run with another three-pointer.

Hood briefly halted the run and were within 28-12 before the Retrievers outscored the Blazers, 20-5, over the final eight minutes.  Grace nailed a trey right before the first half horn and  te Retrievers led, 48-17, at the break, hitting 10-of-22 from behind the arc in the first 20 minutes.

UMBC also hit 17 treys on Dec. 29, 2007, in a 92-83 loss at Ohio State.

Both teams shot better than 50 percent in the second half, scoring 44 points apiece.

Lyles converted 8-of-14 shots from the floor and added four assists and four rebounds.

Freshman forward Arkel Lamar (Bridgeport, Conn.) added 11 points and Wincowski scored a career-high 10 points.

UMBC outrebounded Hood, 44-17, including a 23-6 margin on the offensive glass. Sophomore post Nolan Gerrity (Cleveland, Ohio) led all players and set a career high with 11 rebounds.

Odom became the third UMBC Division I coach (of six) to win his debut, joining Earl Hawkins (1988) and Randy Monroe (2003).

The Retrievers travel to Maryland Eastern Shore for a Sunday contest. Tip-off time is slated for 4:00 p.m.
