UMBC Swimming and Diving Heads to Annapolis for Tri-Meet with Navy and George Mason on Friday

Baltimore, Md.—UMBC swimming and diving is back in the pool on Friday in a tri-meet with host Navy and George Mason. The Retrievers are coming off a strong season opener, which saw several Retrievers earn first place finishes.

Last Time Out:

On the women's side, the team of Emily Escobedo, Allison Atkinson, Hania Moro, and Laura Massicotte won the 400 free relay in a time of 3:36.51, as the Bison won the 200 medley relay earlier in the meet. Moro won three individual events on Saturday in the 1,000 free (10:22.87), 500 free (5:05.32) and the 200 free (1:55.52). Fellow relay mates Emily Escobedo and Allison Atkinson won individual races. Escobedo won the 400 IM in a time of 4:23.88, while Atkinson was a winner in the 50 fly in 26.86.

Sophomore Maddy Popalis earned a pair of first place finishes in both the 100 and 200 breaststrokes with times of 1:07.51 and 2:25.79.

On the boards, freshman Abby Biddulph won the 1 meter dive with a score of 193.73 in her first collegiate meet.

The men earned two relay wins in the 200 medley and 400 free. The quartet of Alexander Gliese, Leo Mercer, Philip Adejumo, and Jared Vance won the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:33.48. Ahmed Wahby, Nikola Trajkovic, Ilia Rattsev and Gregor Spoerlein won the 400 free relay in a time of 3:05.54.

A trio of Retrievers earned multiple individual victories on Saturday. Trajkovic won the 400 IM (4:03.02), 200 IM (1:54.17) and 200 free (1:43.09), while Gilese won the 200 back (1:49.12), 100 back (50.48) and 50 back (23.65). Trajkovic's relay mate Gregor Spoerlein earned victories in the 100 and 200 freestyles with times of 45.39 and 1:40.71, while also earning first in the 50 free in a time of 20.89.

On the boards, Elijah Wright swept the diving disciplines with scores of 198.08 on the 1 meter board and 206.10 on the 3 meter board.

Last Year at Navy:

The women started off the meet by breaking a record. The team of Lauren DayEmily EscobedoAmanda Day and Kristie Langford took first with a time of 1:45.30.

From there, the women went on to win eight individual races, with Escobedo winning three of them. The New York native took first in 100 and 200 breast with times of 1:02.69 and 2:13.74 respectively. Escobedo broke the pool record in the 200 IM with a time of 2:03.56 in the final individual race of the day.

Hania Moro took gold in the 200 and 500 free with times of 1:52.75 and 5:02.62, as she celebrated her birthday on Friday. Other Retriever winners were Laura Massicotte (1,000 free, 10:20.73), Lauren Day (100 back, 58.04), and Aleasha Knight(200 back, 2:05.47).

The men saw a trio of Retrievers place first on Friday night. Gregor Spoerlein won the 200 free in a time of 1:41.83. Just before the first break of the evening, Andrew Sanchez took first in the 50 free in 21.49. Finally, Alexander Gliese won the 200 back for UMBC with a time of 1:51.11.

Up Next:

The Retrievers will make their home debut at the UMBC Aquatic Complex against Towson. The meet with the Tigers is set to begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22.
