Watson Named America East Defensive Specialist of the Week for Third Time; Volleyball Travels to George Washington Wednesday

Sophomore libero Kristin Watson (Bowie, Md/Eleanor Roosevelt) was named America East Defensive Specialist of the Week for the third time this season, the conference announced Tuesday morning.

Watson had a career-high 38 digs on Friday night as the visiting Retrievers rallied from two sets down to defeat Stony Brook in five sets. The 38 digs were the second -highest in UMBC rally-scoring era, and third highest in program history. In addition, Watson tied a career-high with seven assists in the victory. 

The UMBC Volleyball (14-5, 5-2) team will travel to Washington, D.C. on Wednesday to take on George Washington in the final non-conference match of the season. The match is set to being at 7 p.m. with live stats available at GWSports.com.

The Retrievers enters match on a four game win streak, after the victory at Stony Brook. Senior outside hitter Zoya Trendafilova (Sofia, Bulgaria/Elisaveta Bagryana) led the team with 16 kills in the comeback win. UMBC currently sits in second place in the America East with a record of 5-2 in the conference, one game behind Albany. 

Scouting the Colonials: George Washington has an overall record of 8-15 and are 2-7 in A-10 play. The Colonials are coming off of a home sweep of Davidson this past Saturday. Chidim Osuchukwu (234 kills) and Aaliya Davidson (170) are the offensive catalysts for George Washington.  Osuchukwu averages 2.85 kills per set with a hitting percentage of .344, while Emily Clemens and Maddie Brown lead the team with 168 digs a piece.
