Retrievers Drop 1-0 Decision to Hartford on Saturday

Box Score

Baltimore, Md.— UMBC men's soccer dominated play on Saturday night against Hartford, but the Hawks struck late en route to a 1-0 win. The Retrievers outshot the Hawks 21-7, but fell to 4-7-3, 0-5-0 AE on the year.

Hartford struck in the 76th minute on just their seventh shot of the night to give them a 1-0 lead. After a UMBC foul, Udi Cohen took the free kick, and Jeff Tryon had a diving header that skipped past UMBC keeper Billy Heavner (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) for the goal.

That would be all they needed, as Hartford keeper Jimmy Slayton made eight saves, including on a penalty kick in the Hawks win.

Earlier in the second half, Colin Weyant (Perry Hall, Md./Perry Hall) was taken down in the box, setting up Cormac Noel (Todmorden, England/Ryburn Valley) with a penalty kick in the 59th minute. However Noel's shot was saved, and the game remained scoreless.

Freshman Tre Pulliam (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) had a pair of chances late, including one with ten minutes remaining, but his shot was stopped.

Junior Gregg Hauck (Linthicum, Md./North County) led the Retrievers with five shots, including two on net. Noel and sophomore James Gielen (Edgewater, Md./DeMatha) had four shots each in the loss.

The Retrievers opened the contest controlling much of the run of play. UMBC outshot the Hawks, 12-4 in the opening 45 minutes, and had a plethora of good scoring chances.

Gregg Hauck had three shots in the opening half, getting a header on goal off a Sammy Kahsai (Hyattsville, Md./Northwestern) free kick, but Hartford keeper Jimmy Slayton made a one handed save. Colin Weyant, Cormac Noel and Kahsai each had opportunities on goal, but their shots sailed wide as we went scoreless into the break.

The Retrievers are back in action on Tuesday, October 25 when they travel to Philadelphia for a non-conference match with Drexel. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
