Men's Tennis Dominates Singles, Knocks Off Stony Brook, 6-1

Stony Brook, N.Y.- The UMBC men's tennis team won all six singles matches and knocked off Stony Brook, 6-1, in a battle of Missouri Valley Conference rivals.

Both the Retrievers and Seawolves are associate members of the MVC. UMBC improved to 10-5 overall and 2-0 versus MVC foes in 2015, while SBU slipped to 5-6, 1-1.

The host Seawolves won at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles to take the first point of the proceedings. But the Retrievers quickly halted that momentum as countrymen Alex Drean (Bayonne, France) and Elliot Loubatie (Paris, France) won solid decisions at flights four and five. Drean took out Tyler Hoffman, 6-2, 6-2, while Loubatie produced a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Kenzo Kauffmann.

At the No. 1 flight, UMBC junior Jaan Kononov (Talinn, Estonia) continued the Retriever surge with a 6-2, 6-4 triumph over Raphael Termat. At the opposite end of the ladder, senior Daniel Gray (Bowie, Md./The Bullis School) clinched the match for the Retrievers with a 7-5, 6-0 victory over Hari Rohan.

The Retrievers have now won four of five matches and will complete the home slate on Tuesday, April 14 when they host Georgetown in a dual match with the women's squad at 1:00 p.m.
