Drean, Loubatie Triumph, But Navy Edges UMBC, 5-2

Annapolis, Md. – Host Navy won four of five closely-contested matches and edged UMBC, 5-2, at the Tose Family Tennis Center.

After winning the No. 3 doubles match, Navy and UMBC engaged in tough battles in the other contests. But the Mids took the doubles point, prevailing, 6-4, at the No. 1 position.

UMBC struck back quickly to tie the match when senior Alex Drean (Bayonne, France) cruised past Krishna Jana, 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 3 position.

But Navy won the Nos. 5 and 6 matches in straight sets to take a 3-1 advantage. The other three singles matches went the distance. Senior Justin Carter (Randallstown, Md.) bounced back from a 6-3 first-set defeat to even his No. 1 match against Austin Jones with a 6-1 second-set triumph. However, Jones regrouped to win the third set, 6-2, giving the Mids the match victory.

In the final match of the afternoon, senior Eliott Loubatie (Paris, France) edged Aries Wong, 6-3, 5-7, 7-5.

The Mids improved to 16-7 on the season, while UMBC slipped to 5-13.

The Retrievers will host Bryant on Sunday, April 10. Due to expected frigid temperatures this weekend, the match has been moved back to 12:30 p.m.
