UMBC Drops Opener; Wins Nightcap in Double-Header With Citadel

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Charleston, S.C.-- UMBC split the double dip with the Bulldogs on Saturday. UMBC fell 5-3 in the opener, and won 8-5 in comeback fashion in the nightcap. UMBC is now 5-9 on the year.

Game One:

UMBC fell 5-3 in the first game of the twin-bill. The Bulldogs jumped ahead early, but UMBC never wavered, cutting the deficit to just one. However it was not enough as the Citadel held on to win the opener.

The Bulldogs got things started with a run off a sacrifice fly in their half of the first. They would score twice the very next inning to extend their lead to 3-0 after two innings.

Anthony Gatto (Hauppauge, N.Y./Smithtown West) would lead off the fourth inning with a triple. Fellow senior Vince Corbi (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) would follow that up with an RBI single to center field, cutting the deficit to 3-1.

Citadel would score in their half of the fourth, as well as two in the sixth to put the game away. UMBC never gave up as they would get a run in the eighth and ninth as Jake Barnes (Annandale, Va./Annandale) would score off a Kevin Lachance (Clifton, Va./Centreville) hit. Corbi would score a run of his own in the ninth of a Jamie Switalski (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) single.

Starter Joe Vanderplas (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax/Tennessee) went five innings, giving up eight hits and four runs, striking out seven. Corbi and Switalski each went 2 for 4 with a run scored and an RBI.

Game Two:

UMBC was the aggressor early in the second game. Barnes led off the third with a triple, that was followed up with a Connor Hax (Bowie, Md./Bishop McNamara) double to give UMBC a 1-0 lead. Lachance followed suit, grounding out to short, that scored Hax. Nick Naumann (Essex, Md./John Carroll/Chestnut Hill) was next in line with a single up the middle to plate Zack Bright (Fairfax Station, Va./TC Williams), making it 3-0 early.

The Citadel would find the answer in the sixth inning. A leadoff double, followed by a single and another double cut the UMBC lead to 3-2 heading into the seventh. The Bulldogs would complete the comeback, tying the game after a pair of Retriever miscues, to make it 3-3 heading into the final inning.

Following a leadoff single from Corbi and a walk from Brady Zinda (Woodbridge, Va./Hylton), Naumann comes in a smacks a two-RBI single to left center to retake the lead. Andrew Casali (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) adds insurance with a two-RBI single. Gatto followed him with a single of his own to make it 8-3 Retrievers.

The Bulldogs would get a couple of runs in the 9th, but UMBC would hold on to win 8-5 to move to 5-9 on the year.

Naumann was 2-5 in the game, including the go-ahead RBI in the ninth. Mikush gets the win on 1.0 IP, giving up three runs while striking out three.

The Retrievers will return to action on Tuesday, March 24 at Mount St. Mary's. The game with the Mountaineers is set to begin at 3:00 p.m.
