BALTIMORE – Visiting Binghamton (2-3, 1-0 America East) held UMBC (2-4, 0-1) scoreless for over 28 minutes and defeated the Retrievers, 13-4, in the America East opening game for both teams in rainy conditions at UMBC Stadium.

UMBC sophomore midfielder Max Maxwell (Hamburg, N.Y.) was the lone multiple-point scorer for the hosts with a pair of assists.

Binghamton midfielder Tyler Deluca led all goal scorers with four, while senior attackman Tucker Nelson added a goal and three helpers.

The Retrievers got off to a solid start, as senior defender Ian Gray (Scottsdale, Ariz.) gobbled up a Binghamton turnover in his own end, raced into the Bearcat end, and beat netminder Tanner Cosens at the 3:34 mark. Less than two minutes later, junior attackman Nate Lewnes (Arnold, Md./St. Mary's) made it 2-0, converting a pass from junior midfielder Pat Young (Ewing, N.J.) on a man-up situation.

UMBC would win the ensuing draw, but committed a turnover and Binghamton took immediate advantage, as DeLuca scored his first goal of the game at the exact midpoint of the first quarter. The Bearcats would take the lead for good just 47 seconds later, as they scored a pair of goals in a six-second span.

Binghamton outscored UMBC, 3-0, in the second quarter, including a goal by long-stick George Diegnan with three seconds remaining in the stanza to take a 6-2 halftime advantage.

After the visitors increased the lead to 7-2 early in the third quarter, UMBC junior attackman Drew Borsody (Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley) brought a scoring drought of 28:37 with an inside score off a feed from Maxwell. But the Bearcats got that goal back just 37 seconds later, starting a 5-0 run which put the game out of reach.

Binghamton outshot UMBC, 42-23 and controlled 14 of 20 draws, including seven of eight in the middle two stanzas. Cosens made eight saves in over 58 minutes of work, while UMBC's netminding tandem of sophomore starter Connor Gordon (Bourne, Mass.) (6 saves, 11 ga) and freshman reserve David Pisanic (Towson, Md./Boys' Latin) (2 saves, 2ga) combined for eight saves.

The victory was Binghamton's first in nine contests at UMBC.

The Retrievers travel to Stony Brook to take on the Seawolves on Saturday, March 21 at 1:00 p.m.
