Box Score VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS
BALTIMORE – UMBC women's soccer
registered three first-half goals, behind three points from
freshman forward Lisa Nanov
(Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley), and posted its third
shutout in the last four games to defeat American, 3-0, in
non-conference action on Tuesday night at Retriever Soccer
Park.
The Retrievers continued their success at home, winning their
14th game in their last 15 tries at Retriever Soccer Park, to
improve to 7-2-0 on the year, while American falls to 3-7-0.
UMBC jumped on top of American early, scoring in the opening 10
minutes of play, and added two more goals in the period, including
two from set pieces. The Retrievers held a 10-4 shot advantage and
5-1 lead in corner kicks in the half to help the Dawgs coast to the
victory.
Nanov set up her own score in the opening 10 minutes, ripping a
shot that was stopped by American goalkeeper Charlene Belanger, but
Nanov was able to find the loose ball and punch home the rebound
from inside the box for her third goal of the season to give UMBC
an early 1-0 lead.
Red-shirt freshman Destinee
Morris (La Plata, Md./La Plata) nearly added to the Retrievers'
advantage in the 15th minute, but drilled her shot into the
crossbar to keep the advantage at one.
Nanov got back in on the action, setting up the reigning America
East Player of the Week Jessy Brown
(Plantation, Fla./American Heritage) for a header off a corner kick
in the 29th minute to make it a two-goal contest. Nanov's kick was
placed to the far corner for a waiting Brown to knock in for her
fourth goal of the year.
UMBC added one more score before the break, this one coming on a
header from junior back Nikki Boretti
(Garmisch, Germnay/Archbishop Spalding) off a free kick from senior
back Melissa Hummel
(Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) with 1:21 to go in the
period.
American held the Retrievers to three shots in the second half,
but were unable to put away any of their five attempts as junior
goalkeeper Jen
Nance (Millersville, Md./Severna Park) picked up two saves in
her fourth shutout of the campaign.
Nanov and Brown have combined for 15 points in the last four
games and lead the squad with 11 points apiece on the season.
