Akron, Ohio – The UMBC women's tennis team continued its fall campaign by helping Akron University open its new tennis facility at the Akron Shootout. The Retrievers opened the three-day event by winning four of six singles matches versus Duquesne University.
UMBC competed against the host Zips in doubles competition. The hosts captured all three matches, but two of the three were decided in tie-breakers.
The Retrievers got outstanding performances from its freshmen in tight matches versus Duquesne, all of which went to tie-breakers. At the No. 3 flight Alice Taylor (Great Gransden, England) outlasted Spencer Caravaggio, 6-2, 4-6, 10-6 and at the No. 4 position, Hannah Victorsson (Stockholm, Sweden) edged Megan Wasson, 4-6, 6-2, 10-7. Laura Ambrozic (Portoroz, Slovenia) defeated Ally Miller, 6-2, 4-6, 11-9 at the No. 5 position.
UMBC sophomore Mariami Dolashvili (Alushta, Ukraine) rallied to win her match at the No. 1 position, 2-6, 6-2, 10-8.
Against Akron, Victorsson and junior Madlena Kurasz (Zlotoryja, Poland) battled Sophia Geier/Maria Bessmertnaya at No. 2 doubles and lost a tough 8-7 (7-5) decision, while the UMBC tandem of Dolashvili/Taylor dropped an agonizing 8-7 9 (13-11) match to Kati Mdzinarishvili/Ariadna Blinova at the No. 3 slot.
UMBC takes on Texas State in doubles and Akron in singles competition on Saturday.
